What is Zyrtec?
Zyrtec is a medication related to the class of antihistamines reducing natural chemical histamine in the organism. Histamine can cause symptoms of sneezing, itching, watery eyes, and runny nose.
Zyrtec is prescribed for prevention or treatment of hay fever, cold or allergy symptoms like sneezing, itching, watery eyes, or runny nose.
Zyrtec is also prescribed for treatment of itching and swelling caused by chronic urticaria (hives).
The medication can also be prescribed for other uses.
What is important to know about Zyrtec?
Zyrtec may affect the way you think or react. Be careful if you drive or do any other activity requiring attention. Do not drink alcohol; it can worsen certain side effects of Zyrtec. Inform your doctor if you use on a regular basis any other medications making you sleepy (other cold or allergy medications, sleeping pills, medicine for depression, seizures, or anxiety, narcotic pain medicine, muscle relaxers). They can increase sleepiness provoked by Zyrtec. Talk with your doctor if your condition does not improve, if it is getting worse, or if you also have a fever.
How should Zyrtec be used?
Follow the prescriptions of your doctor and the instructions which come with the medication carefully. Do not change your dose and do not use Zyrtec for a longer period than prescribed.
Zyrtex can be used with or without meal.
If you are taking a chewable pill, chew it before you swallow it.
Do not use a table spoon for measuring your dose of Zyrtec. If you do not have a special dose-measuring cup or spoon, ask your healthcare provider where you can get it.
Keep Zyrtec at room temperature protected from heat and moisture.
What side effects can Zyrtec cause?
Seek emergency medical attention if you experience an allergic reaction to Zyrtec (trouble breathing; hives; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat). You should stop taking Zyrtec and call your doctor promptly if you develop any of the following serious conditions:- weakness, tremors (uncontrolled shaking), or trouble sleeping (insomnia);
- urinating less than usual or not at all;
- fast, pounding, or irregular heartbeat;
- vision problems;
- severe restless feeling, hyperactivity; or
- confusion.
- nausea, constipation;
- dizziness, drowsiness;
- headache;
- sore throat, cough;
- tired feeling; or
- dry mouth.
