Prescribing Information for Zyban (Bupropion):
What is Zyban?
Zyban is an antidepressant which helps to give up smoking.
Zyban is prescribed for helping people to give up smoking. It acts by decreasing withdrawal effects, for example, hankering for nicotine. There is known at least one brand of bupropion (Wellbutrin) that is intended for treatment of major depressive disorder and seasonal affective disorder.
The medication may also be prescribed for other uses.

You should not use Zyban if you have used a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) such as isocarboxazid (Marplan), phenelzine (Nardil), rasagiline (Azilect), selegiline (Eldepryl), or tranylcypromine (Parnate) within last 14 days. Do not use it if you have such conditions as eating disorder, seizures, if you are taking some other form of bupropion, or if you have suddenly stopped using sedatives or alcohol.
Zyban may provoke seizures, which are more likely to occur in case of certain diseases or when combining with certain medications. Notify your doctor about all your medical indications and medicines you use.
Taking antidepressants for the first time can cause suicidal thoughts especially among people under 24. You will need to be examined by your doctor regularly for the first 12 weeks of treatment or more.
Call your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any new or aggravating symptoms like: changes of mood or behavior, panics, anxiety, insomnia, irritability, impulsiveness, hostility, aggression, agitation, if you feel mentally or physically hyperactive, more depressed or restless or if you have thoughts of self-injury or suicide. Avoid smoking if you are taking a nicotine product together with Zyban. Excessive amount of nicotine can provoke severe side effects. Do not drink alcohol while using Zyban as it can enlarge the risk of a seizure.
How should Zyban be used?
Follow the prescriptions of your doctor and the instructions which come with the medication carefully. Do not change your dose and do not use Zyban for a longer period than prescribed.
You may take Zyban with or without meal.
If you are using Zyban in order to give up smoking more easily, it is allowed to continue smoking for a week since you start taking the medication. Choose a date during the next week when you will stop smoking. There will be enough of medication accumulated in your blood flow to help you to give up smoking. Ask your doctor for advice if you have problems with giving up smoking after 7 weeks of treatment or more.
Your doctor may advice you to use nicotine patches or gum to bear the period of treatment more easily. You should read all the instructions and safety intormation for the nicotine product. If you are using nicotine with Zyban, your blood pressure may rise up. You should not smoke while using a nicotine product together with Zyban to prevent severe side effects.

Keep Zyban at room temperature protected from heat and moisture.
