What is Xenical (Orlistat)?
Xenical (Orlistat) is a medication that prevents absorption of some of the fat you eat.
The medication is prescribed in combination with a reduced-calorie diet and weight maintenance for treatment of obesity in people with certain conditions (like diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol or triglycerides).
Xenical (Orlistat) can also be prescribed for other purposes.
What is important to know about Xenical (Orlistat)?
Avoid taking Xenical (Orlistat) if you have an allergy to orlistat, or if you have cholecystis problems, or chronic malabsorption syndrome (inability to absorb food and nutrients well).
Before you start using Xenical (Orlistat), let your doctor know if you have an underactive thyroid, if you have ever had gallstones or pancreatitis, type 1 or type 2 diabetes, an eating disorder, liver problems, or if you use other medications for losing weight (prescription or non-prescription).
Do not let children under 18 years old use over-the-counter orlistat (Alli). Children at the age from 12 to 18 may use the medication only if a doctor prescribes it to them. Do not share the medication with anyone, especially with people who have ever had an eating disorder. Keep this medicine out of the reach of others.

It is very important for you to avoid diet containing a lot of fat. Using Xenical (Orlistat) with food containing a lot of fat may increase the risk of undesirable side effects on your stomach or intestines.
How should Xenical (Orlistat) be used?
Follow the prescriptions of your doctor and the instructions which come with the medication carefully. Do not change your dose and do not use Xenical (Orlistat) for a longer period than prescribed.
The medication is provided with patient instructions for harmless and effective use. Follow these instructions closely. If you need any explanations, ask your doctor or pharmacist for them.

Xenical (Orlistat) should be taken with meal or within 1 hour after taking food with low concentration of fat (30% of the calories for that meal or less). In common use, Xenical (Orlistat) is taken every day 3 times a day.
If you miss a meal or if your meal does not enclose fat at all, do not take Xenical (Orlistat) with that meal.
The quantity of fat in your diet should not exceed 30% of all the calories taken during the day. For example, if you consume 1200 calories daily, only 360 of them or less can be in the form of fat.
Read the labels of all the food you eat attentively especially be aware of the quantity of servings per container. Your doctor, nutrition counselor, or dietitian can help you work out a healthy eating plan.
You may need to combine Xenical (Orlistat) with vitamin and mineral supplements. The medicine can make it difficult for your body to absorb vitamins A, D, E, and K which are fat-soluble. Follow the recommendations of your doctor about the type of multi-vitamin or mineral supplement to use.
Wait for at least 2 hours before or after you take Xenical (Orlistat) to take a supplement.
Keep Xenical (Orlistat) at room temperature protected from heat and moisture in a firmly closed bottle.
Count all capsules used from every new bottle. Xenical (Orlistat) is sometimes misused with the purpose of losing weight. Make sure that no one is using the medication in a wrong way or without prescription.
What side effects can Xenical (Orlistat) cause?
Seek emergency medical attention if you experience an allergic reaction to Xenical (Orlistat) (trouble breathing; hives; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat). You should stop using Xenical (Orlistat) and call your doctor immediately if you feel strong pain in your upper stomach spreading to your back, nausea and vomiting, and a fast heart beat. These symptoms may signify development of pancreatitis.
There are some side effects which usually occur when people are using Xenical (Orlistat). This is natural reaction to Xenical (Orlistat)\'s fat-blocking action that signifies that the medicine is working in a proper way. These side effects usually decrease while you continue taking Xenical (Orlistat):- gas with discharge, an oily discharge;
- orange or brown colored oil in your stool;
- oily or fatty stools;
- stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, rectal pain;
- loose stools, or an urgent need to go to the bathroom, inability to control bowel movements;
- weakness, dark urine, clay-colored stools, itching, loss of appetite, or jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes);
- oily spotting in your undergarments; or
- an increased number of bowel movements.
- mild skin rash;
- cold symptoms such as stuffy nose, sneezing, cough;
- headache, back pain;
- problems with your teeth or gums; or
- fever, chills, sore throat, flu symptoms.
Xenical (Orlistat) may also cause other side effects. Call your doctor if you have any uncommon or painful side effects.
