Prescribing Information for Wellbutrin (Bupropion):
What is Wellbutrin?
Wellbutrin is an antidepressant acting in the brain and intended for treatment of depression.
Wellbutrin is intended for treatment of major depressive disorder and seasonal affective disorder. There is known at least one brand of bupropion (Zyban) that is intended for helping people to give up smoking. It acts by decreasing withdrawal effects like hankering.
The medication may also be prescribed for other uses.
What is important to know about Wellbutrin?
You should not use Wellbutrin if you have used a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) like isocarboxazid (Marplan), phenelzine (Nardil), rasagiline (Azilect), selegiline (Eldepryl), or tranylcypromine (Parnate) within last 14 days. Do not use it if you are taking a second form of bupropion, if you have an eating disorder, seizures, or if you have suddenly stopped using alcohol or sedatives.
Wellbutrin may provoke seizures, especially in case of certain diseases or when combining with certain drugs. Notify your doctor about all your medical indications and medicines you use.
Taking antidepressants for the first time can cause suicidal thoughts especially among people under 24. You will need to be examined by your doctor regularly for the first 12 weeks of treatment or more.
Call your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any new or aggravating symptoms like: changes of mood or behavior, panics, anxiety, insomnia, irritability, impulsiveness, hostility, aggression, agitation, if you feel mentally or physically hyperactive, more depressed or restless or if you have thoughts of self-injury or suicide. Do not drink alcohol while using Wellbutrin as it can enlarge the risk of a seizure.
How should Wellbutrin be used?
Follow the prescriptions of your doctor and the instructions which come with the medication carefully. Do not change your dose and do not use Wellbutrin for a longer period than prescribed.
Your doctor may adjust your dose to make certain that you get the most benefit from treatment.
You may take Wellbutrin with or without meal.
Avoid chewing, crushing or breaking the sustained-action capsule. Swallow the tablet whole to prevent releasing of too much medicine at once.
You should not stop taking Wellbutrin without your doctor’s advice. A sudden stop of using this medication can cause undesirable side effects.
In case of using sustained-action capsules, the capsule of the pill may get into your stools (bowel movements). It is a regular situation which does not signify that you are receiving less medicine than needed.
Keep Wellbutrin at room temperature protected from heat and moisture.
