What is Topamax (Topiramate)?

Topamax (Topiramate) is an anticonvulsant medicine.

It is prescribed for prevention of seizures in adults and children who are elder than 2 years old. The medication can be taken separately or combined with other medicines.

Topamax (Topiramate) can also be prescribed for prevention of migraine headaches. The medication does not treat already existing headaches, it can only prevent them or lessen the quantity of attacks.

Topamax (Topiramate) can also be prescribed for other purposes.

What is important to know about Topamax (Topiramate)?

You should seek emergency medical help if you feel a sudden modification in vision and pain around or behind the eyes. These symptoms may signify appearance of a serious adverse reaction to Topamax (Topiramate). Even if your condition improves, you should not give up using the medication without your doctor’s advice. If you stop taking the medication suddenly, your seizures may intensify. You should stop taking it gradually. Talk with your doctor if your seizures worsen or become more frequent while using Topamax (Topiramate).

You may have suicidal thoughts while using Topamax (Topiramate). Your doctor may need to examine you on a regular basis. Avoid missing any scheduled visits.

Call your doctor promptly if you experience any new or aggravating symptoms like: changes of mood or behavior, panics, anxiety, insomnia, irritability, impulsiveness, hostility, aggression, agitation, if you feel mentally or physically hyperactive, more depressed or restless or if you have thoughts of self-injury or suicide. You should have an ID card with you or wear a medical alert bracelet with indication that you are using Topamax (Topiramate) in case of state of emergency.

Topamax (Topiramate) may affect your vision or reaction. Be cautious if you drive or do any other activity requiring attention and clear vision. Do not drink alcohol, it can aggravate some kinds of adverse reaction to Topamax (Topiramate) and enlarge the risk of a seizure.

The risk of kidney stones can rise in case of combining Topamax (Topiramate) with Ketogenic or \"ketosis\" diets which are high in protein and low in carbohydrates. Avoid such combinations.

How should Topamax (Topiramate) be used?

Follow the prescriptions of your doctor and the instructions which come with the medication carefully. Do not change your dose and do not use Topamax (Topiramate) for a longer period than prescribed. Your doctor will need to test your kidney or liver function and blood regularly to ensure that the medication does not harm you. You should not miss any scheduled appointments.

If you are going to have any type of surgery, inform your surgeon in advance that you are taking Topamax (Topiramate). It may be necessary to stop taking the medication for some period of time.

Keep Topamax (Topiramate) at room temperature protected from heat and moisture.

What side effects can Topamax (Topiramate) cause?

Seek emergency medical attention if you experience an allergic reaction to Topamax (Topiramate) (trouble breathing; hives; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat).

Call your healthcare provider immediately if you have any new or aggravating conditions like changes of mood or behavior, panics, anxiety, insomnia, irritability, impulsiveness, hostility, aggression, agitation, if you feel mentally or physically hyperactive, more depressed or restless or if you have thoughts of self-injury or suicide.

Stop using Topamax (Topiramate) and call your doctor promptly if you develop any of the following serious conditions:
  • nausea, vomiting, increased urination, muscle pain or weakness, fast heart rate, feeling light-headed, fainting, or seizure (convulsions);
  • severe pain in your side or lower back, painful or difficult urination.
  • dry mouth, increased thirst, confusion, drowsiness, decreased sweating, increased body temperature, and hot, dry skin, or
  • sudden loss of vision, pain around or behind your eyes.
Topamax (Topiramate) may also cause less serious side effects:
  • headache, dizziness;
  • trouble sleeping (insomnia);
  • slowed thinking, memory problems, trouble concentrating;
  • loss of appetite, weight loss;
  • tired feeling;
  • problems with speech or balance; or
  • numbness or tingling.

Topamax (Topiramate) may also cause other side effects. Call your doctor if you have any uncommon or painful side effects.
