Prescribing Information for Synthroid (Levothyroxine):

What is Synthroid?

Synthroid is a substitute for a hormone which is normally generated by your thyroid gland to regulate the energy of the organism and metabolism. Synchroid is prescribed when this hormone produced by thyroid is not sufficient.

Synthroid is prescribed for treatment of hypothyroidism (low thyroid hormone). The medication can also be prescribed for treatment or prevention of goiter (enlarged thyroid gland) provoked by hormone disbalance, radiation treatment, surgery, or cancer. Do not use it for treatment of obesity or problems with weight.

The medication may also be prescribed for other uses.

What is important to know about Synthroid?

As thyroid hormone is naturally produced in the organism, Synthroid can be used by almost everybody. Do not take it if you have a history of heart attack, a thyroid disorder called thyrotoxicosis, or an uncontrolled adrenal gland problem.

Before you start using Synthroid, inform your healthcare provider if you have problems with your pituitary or adrenal glands, heart problems, anemia (lack of red blood cells), coronary artery disease, diabetes, or a history of blood clots.

If you are using insulin or taking diabetes medications orally, your doctor may need to adjust your dose for these medications when you start taking Synthroid.

Levothyroxine may act in different ways depending of the brand of medication. If you have a new prescription and your new medication looks different, tell it to your doctor or pharmacist.

Several weeks can pass before your organism starts to react to treatment with Synthroid. You should not stop using the medicine abruptly. Even if your condition improves, you may need to use Synthroid daily for all your life to get the thyroid hormone which can not be produced in your organism.

A lot of medications can interact with Synthroid. Let your doctor know about all the medicines you use, including prescription and non-prescription medicines, minerals, vitamins and herbal products. You should inform your doctor if you are going to start taking any new medicine.

How should Synthroid be used?

Follow the prescriptions of your doctor and the instructions which come with the medication carefully. Do not change your dose and do not use Synthroid for a longer period than prescribed.

Your doctor may adjust your dose to make certain than you get the most benefit from your treatment.

You are strongly recommended to swallow Synthroid with 8 ounces (a full glass) of liquid. The pill can disintegrate very quickly and stick in your throat provoking choking or gagging. You should take Synthroid on an empty stomach, do not eat within 30 minutes after taking the medication. The medication is commonly used in the morning. Do not change your dose without your doctor’s advice; take Synthroid at the same time every day.

Several weeks can pass before your organism starts to react to treatment with Synthroid. You should not stop using the medicine abruptly. Even if your condition improves, you may need to use Synthroid daily for all your life to get the thyroid hormone which can not be produced in your organism.

Your doctor may need to check your blood, kidney and liver function regularly to be sure that the medicine helps you. Do not miss any scheduled visits to your doctor.

Inform all the doctors and dentists who are treating you that you are taking Synthroid.

Keep the medication at room temperature protected from heat and moisture.

What side effects can Synthroid cause?

You should stop taking Synthroid and Seek emergency medical attention if you experience any of the following symptoms of allergy: trouble breathing; hives; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat. Call your doctor promptly if you develop any of the following serious conditions:
  • changes in your menstrual periods;
  • appetite changes, weight changes;
  • nervous or irritable feeling;
  • fever, hot flashes, sweating;
  • headache; or
  • sleep problems (insomnia).

Synthroid may also cause less serious side effects such as mild hair loss.

Synthroid may also cause other side effects. Talk with your doctor if you need medical advice about them.
