The nature and purposes of Proscar (Finasteride)
Proscar (Finasteride) is a medication used for prevention of alteration of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in the body. DHT causes occurrence of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).
Proscar (Finasteride) is prescribed for treatment of symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in men who have enlarged prostate.
Proscar (Finasteride) may also be prescribed for other uses.
What is important to know about Proscar (Finasteride)?
Woman and children should avoid using Proscar (Finasteride) and handling the pills. Finasteride can be absorbed through the skin.
Before you start using Proscar (Finasteride), you should inform your doctor if you have a history of allergy to finasteride or to dutasteride (Avodart).
Even though Proscar (Finasteride) should never be used by women, it can affect the unborn babies provoking birth defects if a pregnant woman is exposed to the medication. Women who are pregnant or who are going to become pregnant should avoid contact with the medication. If she accidentally touches the medicine, she should immediately wash the area with soap and water.
You should inform your doctor immediately if you have any breast pain, lumps, nipple discharge, or other breast changes. These symptoms may signify breast cancer.
How should Proscar (Finasteride) be used?
Follow the prescriptions of your doctor and the instructions which come with the medication carefully. Do not change your dose and do not use Proscar (Finasteride) for a longer period than prescribed.
Proscar (Finasteride) should be taken with a full glass of liquid, with or without meal.
To ensure that Proscar (Finasteride) is helping you, your doctor may need to examine your blood regularly. Your prostate specific antigen (PSA) should also be checked for prostate cancer. It is important for you not to miss any scheduled visits to your doctor.
You should use Proscar (Finasteride) on a regular basis to get the best results. You should get your prescription refilled when you have some medication left yet.

What side effects can Proscar (Finasteride) cause?
Seek emergency medical attention if you experience any of the following symptoms of allergy: trouble breathing; hives; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat. Call your doctor promptly if you develop any of the following serious conditions: breast lumps, pain, nipple discharge, or other breast changes. These symptoms may signify male breast cancer.Proscar (Finasteride) may also cause less serious side effects:
- pain in the testicles;
- dizziness, weakness;
- impotence, loss of interest in sex, or trouble having an orgasm;
- runny nose;
- feeling like you might pass out;
- abnormal ejaculation;
- swelling in your hands or feet;
- skin rash;
- swelling or tenderness in your breasts.
Proscar (Finasteride) may also cause other side effects. Inform your doctor if you have any painful or uncommon side effects.
