Prescribing Information for Propecia (Finasteride):
What is Propecia
Propecia is a medicine that blocks the conversion of testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT). It is used to treat male pattern baldness on the vertex and on the top of the head, which usually declares itself in thinning of the hair on the scalp and balding in the mid-scalp area. Propecia is indicated for men only and is not for use in women and children.
The medication may also be prescribed for other uses.
What is important to know about Propecia
Propecia is not indicated for women or children. Women and children are also warned against handling Propecia tablets because of the possibility of absorption of finasterid through the skin.
Before starting treatment with Propecia, let your doctor know if you have a history of allergic reaction to finasteride or to dutasteride (Avodart).
In case of use or handling by women who are pregnant or who are going to become pregnant, Propecia can cause birth defects in unborn babies. The Propecia tablets have a coating on them which prevents from contact with the active component during handling as long as the tablet is whole. In case of accidental contact with a crushed or broken Propecia tablet, a woman should immediately wash the area with water and soap. Call your doctor promptly at the first sign of any changes in breast, for example pain, breast lumps or nipple discharge. These symptoms may signify male breast cancer.
How should Propecia be taken?
Follow the prescriptions of your doctor and the instructions which come with the medication carefully. Do not change your dose and do not use Propecia for a longer period than prescribed.
Propecia can be taken with or without meal. Swallow the medicine with a full glass of liquid.
For best results you should take Propecia regularly. 3 month or more of daily use may be needed to see the first benefits from treatment. Propecia acts only over the long term. If you do not see any result for 12 months of treatment, it is not likely that you will have any result later. If you stop treatment with Propecia, you can lose the hair acquired during the previous 12 months of treatment. Talk about it with your doctor.
Keep Propecia at room temperature protected from moisture, heat, and light and in firmly closed bottle.
What side effects can Propecia cause?
