What is Prilosec (Omeprazole)?
Prilosec (omeprazole) is a proton pump inhibitor decreasing the production of acid in stomach.
Prilosec is commonly prescribed for treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and other diseases provoked by excess stomach acid. It also helps to treat erosive esophagitis (damage to your esophagus caused by stomach acid).
Prilosec (Omeprazole) may also be combined with antibiotics for treatment of gastric ulcer caused by helicobacter pylori infection (H. pylori).
Prilosec should not be used for urgent treatment of heartburn symptoms.
The medication can be also used for other purposes.
What is important to know about Prilosec (Omeprazole)?
Prilosec should not be used for urgent treatment of heartburn symptoms.
For treatment of some diseases it can be necessary to combine Prilosec with antibiotics. Take all the medicines as your doctor has prescribed. Read the instructions that come with the medicines. Do not take it in larger or smaller amounts than prescribed and follow the medication schedule.
Avoid using Prilosec (Omeprazole) if you have allergy to omeprazole or to any other benzimidazole medicine, for example albendazole (Albenza), or mebendazole (Vermox).
Do not stop using Prilosec earlier than prescribed. Your condition can improve before you clear your infection entirely.
Take only one dose of over-the-counter form of Prilosec (Prilosec OTC) in 24 hours during 2 weeks. You may need 4 days or more to get the result. Avoid taking more than one Prilosec pill in 24 hours.
Do not start another 2-week treatment with Prilosec OTC earlier than 4 months after the previous one. If you feel additional symptoms and need treatment sooner, talk with your doctor.
People often confuse heartburn with the first signs of heart attack. Get emergency medical help if you experience chest pain or heavy feeling, nausea, pain spreading to the arm or shoulder, sweating, and a general ill feeling.
If you have liver of heart problems, talk with your doctor about safe use of Prilosec (Omeprazole). It may be necessary to adjust your dose or you may need to be examined by your doctor.
How should Prilosec (Omeprazole) be used?
Follow the prescriptions of your doctor and the instructions which come with the medication carefully. Do not change your dose and do not use Prilosec for a longer period than prescribed.
Prilosec is commonly used before meal. Follow the recommendations of your doctor.
To swallow the medication easier, you may open the sustained-action capsule and mix the medication with a spoonful of pudding or applesauce. Throw out the empty capsule. Swallow the mixture immediately, do not chew it. Do not store the mixture for later use, throw out the empty capsule.
Melt down the powder in a small amount of liquid. Take 1 teaspoon of liquid if you use the 2.5-mg packet or 1 tablespoon of liquid if you use the 10-mg packet. Leave the mixture for 2 or 3 minutes, after that swirl it and drink it immediately.

Swallow the Prilosec OTC pill whole without breaking, crushing or chewing it. Do not stop taking the medication earlier than prescribed. You may feel better earlier than you treat your infection entirely. If you do not feel better or if your condition worsens while using the medication, talk with your doctor.

What side effects can Prilosec (Omeprazole) cause?
Seek emergency medical attention if you experience any of the following symptoms of allergy: trouble breathing; hives; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.
Prilosec may also cause less serious side effects:- headache;
- stomach pain, gas; or
- diarrhea, nausea, vomiting.
Prilosec (Omeprazole) may also cause other side effects. Call your doctor if you need information about them.
