What is Premarin (Estrogens)?
Premarin (Estrogens) is a substitute for a female sex hormone which is important for many processes in the body.
Premarin (Estrogens) is prescribed for treatment of menopause signs; ovary function disorder which includes underdevelopment of female sexual characteristics and some types of infertility; some types of breast cancer in men and in postmenopausal women; deterioration of the vagina; and cancer of urethra and prostate. Premarin (Estrogens) is also prescribed for prevention of osteoporosis.
Premarin (Estrogens) may also be prescribed for other uses.
What is important to know about Premarin (Estrogens)?
Premarin (Estrogens) enlarges the risk of a disease (endometrial hyperplasia) which may provoke cancer of the lining of the uterus. You may decrease this risk combining Premarin (Estrogens) with another hormone substitute, progestins. So if your uterus has not been removed, your healthcare provider may recommend you to combine Premarin (Estrogens) with a progestin. You should visit your doctor on a regular basis and inform him immediately if you have any uncommon vaginal bleeding.
Using Premarin (Estrogens) may enlarge the risk of stroke, breast cancer, heart attack, and blood clots in the lungs or legs. For this reason, the medication may be prescribed at the lowest effective dose and for the shortest period needed for getting a result.
Your physical condition should be monitored every year and your breast should be examined monthly during all the period of treatment with Premarin (Estrogens).
Avoid using Premarin (Estrogens) if you are pregnant.
How should Premarin (Estrogens) be used?
Follow the prescriptions of your doctor carefully. If you need any explanations, ask your doctor, pharmacist or nurse to give them to you.
You should take your dose of the medication with a full glass of liquid.
You may take the medicine with meal or milk to decrease your stomach upset. It is recommended to take the medication at the same time every day.
You should be monitored every year and your breasts should be examined for lumps every month while you are using Premarin (Estrogens).
For better result, take Premarin (Estrogens) on a regular basis.
Your doctor may examine your blood and other parts of your body to see if the medication helps your condition and if you have any side effects.
Keep the medication at room temperature protected from heat and moisture.
What side effects may Premarin (Estrogens) cause?

You should stop using Premarin (Estrogens) and seek emergency medical help if you develop any of these severe side effects:- shortness of breath or chest pain;
- strong headache or vomiting, dizziness, faintness or changes in vision or speech;
- yellowing of the skin or eyes;
- signs of allergy: trouble breathing; hives; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat;
- a lump in a breast;
- uncommon vaginal bleeding;
- pain, swelling, or tenderness in the abdomen; or
- a painful, red, or swollen leg.
- migraine headaches or dizziness;
- swollen or tender breasts;
- depression;
- decreased appetite, nausea, or vomiting;
- changes in menstrual cycle or breakthrough bleeding;
- acne or skin color changes;
- decreased sex drive;
- problems with wearing contact lenses; or
- water retention (swollen hands, feet, or ankles).
Premarin (Estrogens) may also cause other side effects. Call your doctor if you have any uncommon or painful side effects.
