What is Periactin (Cyproheptadine)?
Cyproheptadine is an antihistamine drug which treats allergic responses to allergens or triggers. It does its work by reducing the natural chemical histamines in the body. Histamine, the chemical in our body responsible for allergic responses cause symptoms like sneezing, itching, watery eyes and runny nose.
Cyproheptadine is used to treat sneezing, itching, watery eyes and runny nose and several other signs and symptoms of allergies.
Some physicians may also prescribe this drug for other purposes not listed in this medication guide.
What is important to know about Periactin (Cyproheptadine)?
Inquire from your doctor or acquire more information from him or her when planning to give an over the counter cold or allergy medication to a child. Misuse of cold and allergy drugs by young children can actually lead to death.
You must not use this drug if you are allergic to Cyproheptadine, or if you have glaucoma (closed angle type), a stomach obstruction or gastric ulcer, swollen and enlarged prostate or any problems with regard to urination, or if you are an elder person with a debilitating disease.
Before taking this drug, inform your doctor if you have glaucoma, a history of asthma, high blood pressure, heart disease, an a hyperactive thyroid.
Cyproheptadine may cause side effects that will alter your thinking or the manner you react to things. Be careful when driving or doing anything that will require your wakefulness and alertness. Also avoid drinking alcohol as it may increase the undesired side effects of the drug.
How should Periactin (Cyproheptadine) be taken?
You have to take Periactin (Cyproheptadine) as prescribed by your physician. Never take this drug in amounts smaller or larger than the amount prescribed. Also take this amount for the entire period set by your doctor for maximum effects. Follow the instruction on the drug label provided to you by your doctor.

Measure the liquid form of this drug using a special dose measuring spoon or cup, instead of a regular table spoon. If you do not have any measuring device in your home, ask your pharmacist to give you one.
Store this drug at room temperature and keep them away from moisture, heat and light. Also, keep this out of children’s reach.
Side effects of Periactin (Cyproheptadine).
Seek for emergency medical assistance if you feel like having any of these signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficult breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat. Discontinue taking cyproheptadine and inform your physician at once if you have a severe side effect like any of the following:- confusion, hallucinations, unusual thoughts or behavior;
- seizure (convulsions);
- ringing in your ears;
- feeling like you might pass out;
- fast or pounding heartbeats;
- easy bruising or bleeding;
- urinating less than usual or not at all; or
- pale or yellowed skin, dark colored urine, fever, or unusual weakness.
- mild drowsiness, dizziness, or spinning sensation;
- restlessness or excitability (especially in children);
- sleep problems (insomnia), tired feeling;
- numbness or tingly feeling;
- increased sweating or urination;
- blurred vision;
- appetite chnages;
- dry mouth or nose, upset stomach; or
- nausea, diarrhea, constipation.
