Prescribing Information for Modalert:

Brief description.

Modalert is a well-known remedy to treat excessive daytime sleepiness(EDS) and other symptoms of narcolepsy. It has much lower risk for high blood pressure and other side effects. It also can be used by those people who has shift work sleep disorder or just need to work a lot over the short period of time. But ones should be aware that it cannot be treated as a replacement for sleep in this case. Modalert doesn`t cure EDS and working as long as you taking it.

What is Modalert?

Modalert is a medicine used to treat excessive sleepiness caused by narcolepsy, shift work sleep or sleep apnea disorder. It is considered to work by changing certain natural substances (neurotransmitters) in the brain. The medication also may be prescribed for other uses.

What is important to know about Modalert?

You should avoid using Modalert if you have allergic reaction to any ingredient in Modalert. Before taking Modalert tell your doctor if you have chest pain, any heart, liver or kidney problems, if you have ever had drug addiction, if you take blood pressure medicines or if you have recently had a heart attack.

Modalert can affect your ability to think or react. Avoid driving or doing any other activity requiring attention until you know how Modalert affects you. Modalert can cause side effects, some of them can be serious enough to require hospitalisation. A medicine similar to Modalert has caused serious allergic reactions. If you experience some of these symptoms, stop taking Modalert and call your doctor: fever, sore throat, headache, vomiting with a severe blistering, peeling or even a minor skin rash.

Some other drugs may also interact with Modalert. Be sure to tell your doctor about all the medications, vitamins, herbal products, minerals you are taking or plan to take.

What should I tell my doctor before taking Modalert?

You should avoid using Modalert if you have allergic reaction to modafinil or armodafanil (Nuvigil).

You may need to change the doses of your medications or be monitored before taking Modalert if you have any of these factors:
  • liver or kidney diseases;
  • a heart muscle or valve disorder such as mitral valve prolapse;

How should Modalert be used?

Follow the prescriptions of your doctor and the instructions which come with the medication carefully. For more information, ask your healthcare provider or pharmacist.

Modalert is usually taken every morning or 1 hour before the start of your work shift during a period not exceeding 12 weeks. If your sleepiness is a consequence of obstructive sleep apnea, you may combine taking Modalert with continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machine treatment. This machine works as follows: a pump connected to a mask gently blows pressurized air into your nose while you are sleeping to keep your airway open and to prevent obstruction. Such a combination of treatment with CPAP machine and Modalert may increase the positive effect of your condition. Modalert does not cure obstructive sleep apnea and does not treat its causes. Follow the prescriptions of your doctor about other ways of its treatment. Talk with your doctor if the excess sleepiness does not pass even while taking this medicine.
