Macrobid is an antibiotic fighting bacteria in the body.
Macrobid is commonly prescribed for treatment of urinary tract infections.
Macrobid (Nitrofurantoin) may also be prescribed for other uses.
What is the most important to know about Macrobid (Nitrofurantoin)?
You should contact your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following side effects: fever, chest pain, cough, feeling short of breath (even with mild exertion), pale skin, unusual weakness, watery or bloody diarrhea, yellowing of the skin or eyes.
Do not take antacids without prescription of your doctor. Do not take any other type of antacids than your doctor prescribes. Antacids contain different medications and some of them can make it difficult for your body to absorb Macrobid.
Do not stop using Macrobid (Nitrofurantoin) earlier than prescribed. Your condition can improve earlier than you treat your disease entirely. Macrobid is not effective for treatment of viral infection like flu or cold. Macrobid should be taken with meal or milk.
How should Macrobid (Nitrofurantoin) be used?
Follow the prescriptions of your doctor and the instructions which come with the medication carefully. Do not change your dose and do not use Macrobid for a longer period than prescribed.
You should take your dose of Macrobid with a full glass of liquid. Take it with meal or milk. If you use the liquid form of the medication, shake it well before you take a dose. Do not use a table spoon to measure the dose of liquid form of Macrobid. If you do not have a special dose-measuring cup or spoon, ask your healthcare provider where you can get it. You may add the dose of Macrobid to water, milk or fruit juice to swallow it more easily. Swallow the mixture immediately.
Do not stop taking Macrobid (Nitrofurantoin) earlier than prescribed. Your condition may improve earlier than you treat your infection entirely. Macrobid is commonly recommended to be used for up to 1 week after the medical tests show that the infection has been completely treated. Macrobid is not effective for treatment of viral infection like flu or cold.
Your doctor will need to check your kidney to ensure that the medicine does not make you any harm. Avoid missing any scheduled visits.
You may have uncommon results of some urine glucose (sugar) tests when you are using Macrobid. Inform all the doctors who are treating you that you are taking Macrobid.
Keep the medicine at room temperature protected from heat, light, and moisture. Avoid freezing the liquid nitrofurantoin medication.
What side effects can Macrobid (Nitrofurantoin) cause?You should seek emergency medical help if you experience any of the following symptoms of allergy: trouble breathing; hives; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat. You should call your doctor promptly if you develop any of the following serious conditions:
- pale skin, easy bruising, confusion or weakness;
- numbness or tingling;
- headache, ringing in your ears, dizziness, vision problems, pain behind your eyes;
- shortness of breath, running out of breath easily;
- watery or bloody diarrhea;
- fever, chills, cough, chest pain; or
- nausea, stomach pain, low fever, loss of appetite, dark urine, clay-colored stools, jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes).
- upset stomach, vomiting;
- blurred vision;
- bloating or gas, constipation;
- feeling dizzy or drowsy;
- vaginal itching or discharge; or
- rust-colored or brownish urine.
