Levaquin (Levofloxacin) is a drug indicated for the treatment of a bacterial infectious in the body. It belongs to fluoroquinolones class of drugs. It can treat infectious of skin, renal tract, sinuses, prostate and pulmonary tract ailments like pneumonia and bronchitis. Levaquin can even help people to treat anthrax.
What is important to know about Levaquin (Levofloxacin)?
Do not use Levaquin (Levofloxacin) if you have suffered allergy from ciprofloxacin, moxifloxacin, ofloxacin and other drugs of the same class.
You must not have following disease conditions before using Levaquin-myasthenia gravis, joint pain, rheumatism, diabetes, epilepsy, and long ‘QT’ syndrome.
Avoid the use of antacids, vitamins and minerals, videx powder, sucralfate within 2 hours before using Levaquin (Levofloxacin).
Levaquin (Levofloxacin) can make your skin sensitive to sunlight, sunlamps, tanning etc.
There can be tendinitis or inflammation of tendons in the joints especially the tendon of Achilles of the heel. Do not use steroids with Levaquin and if you had a lung transplant, renal or heart diseases. Stop use of Levaquin if severe inflammation of tendons and joints is seen.
Take adequate amount of rest and don’t share this drug with other people even if they have same symptoms as you.
What should I tell my doctor before taking Levaquin (Levofloxacin)?
Levaquin (Levofloxacin) should not be used by patients allergic to fluoroquinolones like ciprofloxacin, moxifloxacin, ofloxacin and other drugs of the same class. . Also, patients with heart rhythm disease using quinidine, disopyramide, procainamide or sotalol can not use Levaquin.
You must not be suffering from specific disease conditions before using Levaquin-myasthenia gravis, joint pain, rheumatism, diabetes, epilepsy, and long ‘QT’ syndrome.
Levaquin (Levofloxacin) belongs to the FDA pregnancy category C which implies Levaquin may harm the developing fetus and can pass through breast milk and cause side effects in new-born infant. Hence, it should not be used in gestational and lactating phases.
