What is Indocin (Indomethacin)?
Indocin is part of the group of drugs called the NSAIDs (Non-steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs). Indomethacon works primarily by decreasing the production of hormones which leads our body to feel pain and develop the inflammatory process.
Indocin (Indomethacin) is used to alleviate pain or inflammation related to diseases or conditions such as arthritis or gout, ankylosing spondylitis, bursitis or tendinitis.

What is important to know about Indocin (Indomethacin)?
This drug increases the likelihood of developing heart-related diseases and problems like heart attack or cerebrovascular accident (stroke). The chances shoot up as the person takes this drug longer. Never use this drug before or after having a CABG or coronary artery bypass graft.
Ask for emergency medical help if you develop signs and symptoms of circulatory problems like chest pain, body weakness, shortness of breath, slurred speech or vision and balance difficulties.
Indocin (Indomethacin) also increases the risks of serious damages to the gastrointestinal tract especially the stomach and intestines, which includes bleeding and perforation. These disorders may be very dangeriosu and GI effects can happen without any explicit warning anytime you are taking the said drug. Elder people may also be presented with greater risks because of the changes in the linings of the GI tract making it easily damaged by such drugs.
Inform your doctor if you experience symptoms of bleeding in your stomach and intestine. Signs and symptoms include most definitely black, bloddy and tarry stools. Coughing up blood or vomiting coffee ground like substances may also indicate internal bleeding.
Never drink alcohol when taking this drug. Alcohol increases the chances of bleeding in the GI system caused by Indocin. Never use any other Over-The-Counter drugs like medicines for cough and cold, allergies or pain relievers without the physician’s green light. Many drugs out there in the market contain aspirin, a similar component to Indocin such that if you take such drugs, you might be overdosed and may suffer from more dangerous complications.
Be careful in reading the label of the drugs/medicines that you are planning to use if it also contains aspirin, ibuprofen, ketoprofen or naproxen.
How should Indocin (Indomethacin) be taken?
You have to take Indocin as prescribed by your physician. Never take this drug in amounts smaller or larger than the amount prescribed. Also take this amount for the entire period set by your doctor for maximum effects. Follow the instruction on the drug label provided to you by your doctor.
Indocin (Indomethacin) should be taken with food or milk to lessen the incidence of gastric irritation. Never crush, chew, break or open an extended release capsule because it defeats the purpose of preventing gastric irritation as well as longer bioavailability. Stop taking this drug and seek medical attention or inform your doctor at once if you have any of these serious side effects.
- chest pain, weakness, shortness of breath, slurred speech, problems with vision or balance;
- black, bloody, or tarry stools;
- coughing up blood or vomit that looks like coffee grounds;
- swelling or rapid weight gain;
- urinating less than usual or not at all;
- nausea, stomach pain, low fever, loss of appetite, dark urine, clay-colored stools, jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes);
- fever, sore throat, and headache with a severe blistering, peeling, and red skin rash; or
- bruising, severe tingling, numbness, pain, muscle weakness.
- upset stomach, mild heartburn, diarrhea, constipation;
- bloating, gas;
- dizziness, nervousness, headache;
- skin rash, itching;
- blurred vision; or
- ringing in your ears.
