What is Imitrex?
Imitrex is a migraine medication. It is considered to act by constricting the blood vessels around the brain. It also lessens amount of substances in the body which can provoke such symptoms of migraine as headache, nausea, sensitivity to light and sound, and others.
Imitrex pills and nasal spray are prescribed for treatment of migraines.
Imitrex only treats existing headaches. It does not help to avoid headaches or lessen the number of attacks.
What is important to know about Imitrex?
Do not take Imitrex if you have allergy to sumatriptan or if you suffer from severe liver disease, ischemic bowel disease, severe high blood pressure, or if you have ever had heart problems, angina, circulation problems, or heart attack.
Imitrex can provoke severe side effects on heart such as stroke or heart attack. Even though these adverse reactions do not occur often, you should not take Imitrex if you have ever had heart problems, angina (chest pain), bloodstream problems, ischemic bowel disease, severe or uncontrolled high blood pressure, if you have ever had a stroke or heart attack.
Before you start taking Imitrex, inform your healthcare provider if you have high blood pressure, kidney or liver problems, a seizure disorder, coronary artery disease, if you have risk factors for coronary artery disease (for example diabetes, smoking, menopause, being overweight, having high blood pressure or high cholesterol, having a family history of coronary artery disease, being older than 40 and a man, or being a woman who has had a hysterectomy).
If you are using eletriptan (Relpax), almotriptan (Axert), rizatriptan (Maxalt), naratriptan (Amerge), frovatriptan (Frova), zolmitriptan (Zomig), or ergot medicine like dihydroergotamine (D.H.E. 45, Migranal Nasal Spray), methysergide (Sansert), ergonovine (Ergotrate), ergotamine (Ercaf, Ergomar, Ergostat, Wigraine, Cafergot), or methylergonovine (Methergine), wait for at least 24 hours before or after taking Imitrex. If you are using monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI), for example isocarboxazid (Marplan), tranylcypromine (Parnate), rasagiline (Azilect), selegiline (Eldepryl, Emsam), or phenelzine (Nardil), avoid using Imitrex within 2 weeks from your last dose of any of these medications. Before starting Imitrex, let your doctor know if you are also using any antidepressant like duloxetine (Cymbalta), escitalopram (Lexapro), venlafaxine (Effexor), sertraline (Zoloft), fluoxetine (Prozac, Sarafem), citalopram (Celexa), fluvoxamine (Luvox), or paroxetine (Paxil).

You should not take the second pill of Imitrex earlier than 2 hours after the first one. Avoid taking more than 200 mg of sumatriptan pills in 24 hours.
You should not use the second dose of Imitrex nasal spray earlier than 2 hours after the first one. Avoid taking more than 40 mg of sumatriptan nasal spray in 24 hours.
How should Imitrex be taken?
Follow the prescriptions of your doctor and the instructions which come with the medication carefully. Do not change your dose and do not use Imitrex for a longer period than prescribed. Overdose of migraine medications can worsen your headache.
Take Imitrex immediately when you feel the first signs of headache or when an attack has already started.
Your healthcare provider can give you the first dose of this medication in a hospital to control if you have any severe side effects.
Swallow every tablet of Imitrex whole with a full glass of liquid. Avoid crushing the tablet.
If your headache does not disappear or if it disappears and returns, take the second pill 2 hours after the first one. Avoid taking more than 200 mg of sumatriptan pills in 24 hours. If your condition does not improve, do not take any more medicine without calling your doctor.
The Imitrex nasal spray goes with information about harmless and efficient use. Follow these instructions carefully. If you would like more information, talk with your doctor. Blow your nose before you use the spray. Avoid sneezing or blowing your nose immediately after you have used the spray.
If your headache does not disappear after you have used the spray, do not repeat treatment without your doctor’s recommendation. If your headache disappears and returns, you may use the second dose of spray not less than 2 hours after the first one. Avoid taking more than 40 mg of sumatriptan nasal spray in 24 hours. If your condition does not improve, do not take any more medicine without calling your doctor.
Inform your doctor if you have headaches more often than 4 times in a month (30 days).
Keep Imitrex at room temperature protected from heat, light and moisture.
What side effects can Imitrex cause?
Seek emergency medical attention if you experience any of the following symptoms of allergy: trouble breathing; hives; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat. You should stop taking Imitrex and call your doctor promptly if you develop any of the following serious conditions:- seizure (convulsions);
- sudden and severe stomach pain and bloody diarrhea;
- numbness or tingling and a pale or blue-colored appearance in your fingers or toes;
- fast heart rate, agitation, muscle stiffness, hallucinations, lack of coordination, with nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea;
- sudden headache, confusion, problems with vision, speech, or balance;
- sudden numbness or weakness, especially on one side of the body; or
- chest pain or heavy feeling, pain spreading to the arm or shoulder, nausea, sweating, general ill feeling.
- sneezing, runny nose, congestion, cough;
- burning, numbness, pain or other irritation in your nose or throat after using the nasal spray;
- dizziness, sleepiness;
- pressure or heavy feeling in any part of your body;
- nausea, vomiting, diarrhea;
- drooling or sweating;
- warmth or redness under your skin;
- muscle pain; or
- unusual taste in your mouth after using the nasal spray.
Imitrex may also cause other side effects. Talk with your doctor if you need medical advice about them.
