What is Flagyl (Metronidazol)?
Flagyl (Metronidazol) is a drug used for the treatment of bacterial infections. It is indicated in various types of infections. Flagyl (Metronidazol) contains metronidazole as an active ingredient Sanofi Aventis holds the brand Flagyl. It belongs to antibiotic category of drugs. It can treat bacterial infections as well as protozoa diseases.
What should I know about Flagyl (Metronidazol)?
Metronidazole or Flagyl (Metronidazol) can act by interfering with the DNA of bacteria and protozoa. It stops bacteria from developing a new DNA. The DNA synthesis is stopped and this kills the bacteria affecting the body. There are anerobic bacteria which can cause numerous types of infections in the body. Anerobic bacteria do not need any oxygen to grow and reproduce. Therefore they can cause infection in the parts of the body where the oxygen supply is less i.e. in bones, gums, and gut and pelvis cavity. We can use Flagyl (Metronidazol) to treat by ulcers and pressure roses.
Flagyl (Metronidazol) is also indicated for the treatment of gynecological surgery and to prevent infections after surgery. It may pass through brain blood barrier and hence, is used for the cure of brain abscesses. Flagyl can treat infections occurring due to trichomonas vaginalis, entamoeba histolytica which causes dysentery and giardiasis.
Flagyl (Metronidazol) tablets can also be taken by suppositories or intravenous infusion & in advanced cases where month administration is not possible. Flagyl is indicated for preventing the anaerobic bacteria infection, treating post surgical infections, septicemia, blood infections, in puerperal fever, osteomyelitis or infection of body, pneumonia, peritonitis, brain abscess, leg ulcers, pressure roses and gingivitis. Flagyl (Metronidazol) tablets should be taken with good amounts of water and should not be chewed and swallowed or broken into pieces.
How to use Flagyl (Metronidazol)?
You can’t drink alcohol with metronidazole for a period of 48 hours otherwise side effects can occur like hot flushes, abdominal camps and palpitations. Do not drive on heavy machines or drive after taking this drug as it can impair you mental ability. There can be varying amount of drowsiness or dullness in different individuals. Use Flagyl (Metronidazol) carefully in patients having low kidney and liver function, rare blood disorders called porphyrias and hepatic encephalopathy. It is contraindicated in patients having allergy to this kind of drugs. Metronidazole is not to be used in pregnant women as it may harm the growing fetus. This drug is known to pass through mother’s milk. It should be used carefully in breastfeeding or lactating mothers. Do not take high dose of this drug while feeding your child. What are the possible side effects of Flagyl (Metronidazol)?
Common side effects of Flagyl (Metronidazol) are diarrhea, vomiting, nausea, constipation unpleasant taste, skin rashes and urticaria. There can be moderate to severe side effects of Flagyl (Metronidazol). These include furry tongue, angiodema, and headache, darkening of urine, visual disturbances, liver disease, neuropathy, leucopenia and seizures.
How Flagyl (Metronidazol) interacts with other drugs?
Flagyl (Metronidazol) may interact with the herbal supplements and over the counter drugs (OTC) without consulting your physician. Tell about every drug that you think is unimportant to your doctor Flagyl (Metronidazol) can not be taken along with alcohol. To prevent unpleasant symptoms keep a gap of at least 48 hours from metronidazole before consuming alcohol. It can increase blood clotting time or INR when taken with anticoagulant drugs like warfarin. It can increase blood level of ciclosporin and levels of Flagyl (Metronidazol) can increase with lithium, phenytoin, ciclosporin and fluorouracil.
