What is Elavil (Amitriptylin)?
Elavil (Amitriptylin) is a drug used for treatment of depression. It has amitriptyline hydrochloride as main ingredient. It is a TCA or Tricyclic Antidepressant. This class of drugs is used for the treatment of depression. It acts on the neurons or nerve cells in the brain. TCA or tricyclic antidepressants modify the chemical compounds known as neurotransmitters in the brain.
What should I know about Elavil (Amitriptylin)?
Serotonin and noradrenalin are the two neurotransmitters which are known to lighten the mood in the body. These are released from the nerves and calm the electrical activity from the nerve cells. When these two neurotransmitters are release from the nerve cells. They will lighten the mood whereas when they are reabsorbed into the neurons, they will have no effect on the mood of the person. TCA or tricyclic antidepressants will prevent the reabsorption of serotonin and nor adrenalin into the neurons. This will increase the duration of mood lightening effect of these neurotransmitters.
The depression will be relieved in the patients. However, there can be side effects of amitriptyline like drowsiness. Patients may have other side effects like anxiety or agitation the full effects of Elavil (Amitriptylin) can be seen after two or four weeks of its usage.
Don’t stop the drug in between the treatment and use it constantly to get best effects. It can also be used for treatment of bed wetting in children. It will block the receptors known as cholinergic receptors which are found on the bladder muscle cells. Acetylcholine secretion is prevented by use of Elavil (Amitriptylin). Latter will reduce the involuntary contradiction of the bladder and the capacity of bladder to retain the urine will be increased.
How to use Elavil (Amitriptylin)?
Elavil (Amitriptylin) can be used for a maximum period of 12 weeks after which a full assessment of child needs to be done. Elavil (Amitriptylin) is indicated for treatment of depression, nocturnal enuresis or bed wetting, to prevent migraine and for treatment of nerve pain. It may cause suicidal thoughts or depression in the persons using it. If you have any self having thoughts over whelming your mind, you must stop treatment and consult your doctor soon.
It can cause drowsiness. Therefore, you should not drive or operate on heavy machines after taking the dose. You should not take Elavil (Amitriptylin) with alcohol. Alcohol may cause heavy sedation with Elavil (Amitriptylin). Talk to your doctor for further information Elavil (Amitriptylin) use carefully in decreased liver function, uncertain results of liver function test, BPH or benign prostatic hypertrophy, glaucoma, epilepsy, heart-disease, chronic disease of spleen, lungs etc.
You must used Elavil (Amitriptylin) carefully in patients suffering from hyperthyroidism or underactive thyroid gland or hypothyroidism, in tumor of adrenal glands, schizophrenic patients, in maniac disorders and persons having suicidal behavior. This drug is highly contraindicated in patients suffering from severe liver disease, heart attack, glaucoma, maniac depression and persons who have been taking.
Monoamine oxidase inhibitor drugs in last 15 days. Don’t use if you have rare blood disease, porphyrias. This drug is highly contraindicated in pregnant and breast feeding women as it can harm the developing fetus and new born infant in both the cases particularly in first and trimester. It is known to pass through mother’s milk and can harm the newborn.
What can be the side effects of Elavil (Amitriptylin)?
Elavil (Amitriptylin) may cause side effects like drowsiness, blurred vision, sweating, headache, hypotension, convulsions, abnormal heart beat tachycardia, blood disorder etc. There can be hypotension or low blood. There can be side effects like light headed and fatigue. You must be caution while lying down or sitting if you are consuming Elavil. Hyponatremia or low sodium levels can also be seen in the body. This medicine is known to cause dry mouth or tooth decay if used for long duration. Withdrawal symptoms can also be seen with this drug. These are nausea, vomiting, headache, restlessness or anxiety etc. Depression may reoccur if you stop the treatment abruptly. Changes in the behavior may also occur.
How Elavil (Amitriptylin) interacts with other drugs?
There can be various interactions of Elavil (Amitriptylin) with the drugs and supplements. Do not take Elavil (Amitriptylin) with other drugs of same class. Do not take additional drugs. Elavil (Amitriptylin) can not be taken with MAOI drugs like isocarboxazid. You can’t take it if you are using MAOI antidepressant drugs. You should gap Elavil and MAOI for at least two weeks before you start using Elavil. Medicines that increase the serotonin activity are lithium, sibutramine, SSRI and SNRI antidepressants and other TCA drugs. Side effects of Elavil (Amitriptylin) can increase when you combine it with these drugs. Drowsiness can increase when taken along with sedating antihistamines, sleeping tablets, benzodiapines, antihistamine drugs, and muscle relaxants, anti-sickness medicines like cyclizine, antipsychotic drugs and moxifloxacin. It can increase the INR or blood clothing time when taken with warfarin. Amitriptyline can increase the risk of side effects along with calcium channel blockers, cimetidine, and rifonavir and SSRI antidepressant drugs.
