Prescribing Information for Depakote (Divalproex):

What is Depakote?

Depakote is a medication affecting certain chemicals in the body that may cause conditions leading to seizures.

It is commonly used for treatment of different types of seizure diseases. It can be combined with other medications. It can also be used for treatment of the manic-depressive illness (manic phase of bipolar disorders) and for prevention of migraine headaches.

The medication may also be prescribed for other purposes.

What is important to know about Depakote?

There were cases when Depakote provoked deathful liver disease especially in children under 2 years old. Risk of severe liver problems increases in children if they use several seizure medications, if they have a metabolic disorder, or if they have a brain disease that leads to mental impairment (such as Creutzfeldt-Jacob disease, Huntington disease, multiple sclerosis, or a brain injury or infection). Get emergency medical help if a person who uses Depakote has nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, or loss of appetite, low fever, dark urine, clay-colored stools, or jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes). These conditions can signify that the liver is damaged. They can also be first signs of pancreatitis. Depakote can provoke birth defects. You should not take Depakote when you are pregnant unless your doctor tells you otherwise. Choose an effective form of birth control and inform your doctor if you become pregnant when you are using Depakote.

Taking Depakote can cause suicidal thoughts. You will need to be examined by your doctor regularly. It is important for you not to miss any scheduled visits to your doctor.

Call your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any new or aggravating symptoms like: changes of mood or behavior, panics, anxiety, insomnia, irritability, impulsiveness, hostility, aggression, agitation, if you feel mentally or physically hyperactive, more depressed or restless or if you have thoughts of self-injury or suicide.

How should Depakote be used?

Follow the prescriptions of your doctor and the instructions which come with the medication carefully. Do not change your dose and do not use Depakote for a longer period than prescribed.

You should drink more liquid while using Depakote. If you drink less liquid than you need, your dose should be adjusted.

Your doctor will need to test your liver function to ensure that the medicine does not make you any harm. Do not miss any appointments to your doctor.

Continue using Depakote even if your condition improves. Take it on a regular basis in order to prevent seizures. Get your prescription refilled when you have the medication left yet. Let your doctor know if you feel that Depakote is not helping you as well to prevent seizures. Swallow the sustained-action pill or capsule whole. Avoid breaking, chewing, or crushing it to prevent releasing too much medicine at once.

To swallow the medicine easier, you may open the sustained-action capsule and mix the medication with a spoonful of pudding or applesauce. Throw out the empty capsule. Swallow the mixture immediately, do not chew it. Do not store the mixture for later use, throw out the empty capsule.

Have an ID card or a medical alert bracelet indicating that you are using Depakote with you in case of emergency. Inform all the doctors treating you that you are using Depakote. Keep Depakote at room temperature protected from heat and moisture.

What side effects can Depakote cause?

Get emergency medical help if a person who uses Depakote has nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, or loss of appetite, low fever, dark urine, clay-colored stools, or jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes). These conditions can signify that the liver is damaged. They can also be the first signs of pancreatitis.

Seek emergency medical attention if you experience an allergic reaction to Depakote (trouble breathing; hives; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat).

You should call your doctor immediately if you develop any of the following serious conditions:
  • double vision or back-and-forth movements of the eyes;
  • fever, sore throat, and headache with a severe blistering, peeling, and red skin rash;
  • extreme drowsiness, bad coordination;
  • easy bruising or bleeding, bloody urine;

  • mild drowsiness or weakness;
  • weight changes;
  • depression, anxiety, or other emotional changes;
