Prescribing Information for Deltasone (Prednisolone):
Deltasone is a medication used in cancer, blood and breathing disorders, eye and skin problems conditions. The drug belongs to the class of immunosuppressants, however has plenty of undesired effects, because makes the person extremely susceptible to viruses and infections.
The structure of the Deltasone has been identified by Arthur Noble in the 1950s. The scientists used Corynebacterium simplex to oxidize the cortisone to prednisone. Deltasone, Prednisone is its generic name, had been synthesised in the laboratories of Schering-Plough, where some clinical trials and experiments on mice had been held. In the 1955 the drug was introduced as Meticorten, nowadays it is available under various brand names from a variety of drugs manufacturers worldwide.
How to use
Strictly follow the prescriptions of your attending physician, take the drug as the prescriber directs you and carefully follow the dosing schedule. Deltasone is advised to take with a big amount of water (not less than one glass) or preferably with milk and after food to prevent nausea and diarrhea. Taking deltasone liquid, use only the special measuring spoon not to overdose. Household spoons go in various sizes and dose may be incorrect.
We strongly recommend not to stop taking deltasone without talking to your prescriber even if you have any side effects. To prevent any adverse effect tell your doctor about all the medications you are going to combine with deltasone and allergies you have. Deltasone contain some inactive components not list in the instruction list.
Withdrawal and dependency
The scheme of withdrawal has to be determined individually, taking in account the disease, duration of treatment and the possibility of relapse according to the current condition of the patient. If the duration of treatment had been more than 21 day, deltasone had been taken twice daily in doses exceeding 40mg per day the scheme of gradual withdrawal has to be applied, in other cases the abrupt withdrawal is allowed.
Due to the long corticosteroid treatment the body may lose an ability to produced this substances itself, such processes result in dependency. Abrupt withdrawal may lead to chronic adrenal insufficiency for those who were on a long-term treatment. Contact your doctor if you are going to reduce the dose or stop deltasone treatment.
Side effects and precautions
You should remember that most patients do not experience any side effects at all, serious undesired effects have less 3% of people taking the drug.
The following side effects are not serious and don’t require immediate medical help:
- Mood changes
- Tired feeling and muscle weakness
- Headaches or upset stomach
- Fluid retention
The next symptoms require medical piece of advice but are not emergent situations:
- Nausea and vomiting within 24 hours and more
- Bone pain
- Swelling of feet and arms
- Bloody urine and stools or any unusual bleeding
It’s strongly recommended not to get pregnant while taking the drug, it is also contraindicated while breast-feeding. Talk with your doctor on this issue, when it will be possible to conceive a child after the Deltasone therapy.
Don’t combine deltasone with any immunization therapy drugs, don’t use aspirin containing products before the approval of your prescriber.
