Prescribing Information for Cleocin (Clindamycin):

What is Cleocin (Clindamycin)?

Clindamycin is an antibiotic medicine that fights bacteria in the body.

It is prescribed for treatment of severe infections provoked by bacteria.

The medication may also be prescribed for other purposes.

What is the most important to know about Cleocin (Clindamycin)?

You should not use Cleocin (Clindamycin) if you have allergy to clindamycin or lincomycin (Bactramycin, L-Mycin, Lincocin).

Do not combine clindamycin with erythromycin (E.E.S., EryPed, Ery-Tab, Erythrocin, and others).

Before you start using clindamycin, let your doctor know if you have kidney or liver problems, an intestinal disorder such as colitis or Crohn\'s disease, or if you have ever had asthma, eczema, or allergic skin reaction.

You may feel better before you cure your disease entirely. Do not stop using the medication earlier than prescribed. Clindamycin is not useful for treatment of viral infection like common cold or flu.

Antibiotics can provoke diarrhea, which may signify a new infection. If you have a watery or bloody diarrhea, stop using clindamycin and call your doctor. Do not use anti-diarrhea medicine unless your doctor tells you otherwise.

Your doctor may need to test your blood and kidney or liver function to ensure that the medicine is not harmful for you. Do not miss any scheduled appointments.

If you are going to have any type of surgery, inform your surgeon in advance that you are taking clindamycin. It may be necessary to stop using the medication for some period of time.

How should Cleocin (Clindamycin) be used?

Follow the prescriptions of your doctor and the instructions which come with the medication carefully. Do not change your dose and do not use Clindamycin for a longer period than prescribed.

Take Clindamycin with a full glass of liquid to protect your throat. Shake the bottle with the oral form of medication well just before measuring a dose. Do not use a table spoon for measuring your dose of Clindamycin. If you do not have a special dose-measuring cup or spoon, ask your healthcare provider to give you one.
