What is Claritin (Loratadine)?
Claritin is an antihistamine medication that works by reducing the natural chemical histamine in the body. Histamine provokes signs of sneezing, itching, watery eyes, and runny nose.
Claritin (Loratadine) is prescribed for treatment of seasonal allergies, like sneezing, watery eyes, and runny nose and itching of the nose and throat. Claritin can also be prescribed for treatment of skin hives and itching in people with chronic skin problems.
The medication may also be prescribed for other uses.
What is important to know about Claritin (Loratadine)?
Do not use Claritin if you have allergy to loratadine or to desloratadine (Clarinex).
Before you start using Claritin (Loratadine), inform your doctor if you have allergy to any medicine, or if you have liver or kidney problems.
Children under 6 years old should not be allowed to take Claritin without prescription of a doctor.
Loratadin dissolving pills (Claritin Reditab) may include phenylalanine. Do not start using Claritin (Loratadine) Reditabs without talking with your doctor first if you have phenylketonuria (PKU).
How should Claritin (Loratadine) be used?
Follow the prescriptions of your doctor or the instructions which come with the medication carefully. Do not change your dose and do not use Claritin for a longer period than prescribed.
Claritin is commonly taken once in 24 hours. Follow the directions of your doctor.
Swallow the Claritin (Loratadine) pill whole without crushing, chewing, or breaking it.
Do not use a table spoon to measure the dose of liquid form of Claritin (Loratadine). If you do not have a special dose-measuring cup or spoon, ask your healthcare provider where you can get it.If you are using Claritin (Loratadine) RediTabs:
- Do not open the blister pack until you are ready to take the medicine. Then take a blister and peel back the foil from a tablet. You should not push the pill through the foil in order to prevent damaging the pill.
- Take the tablet with dry hands and put it on your tongue. It will start to disintegrate immediately.
- You should not chew the pill or swallow it whole, it will disintegrate itself.
- When the pill disintegrates, swallow several times. You may drink liquid to swallow the disintegrated pill more easily.
If your condition does not improve, talk with your doctor.
Keep the medication at room temperature protected from heat and moisture.
What side effects can Claritin (Loratadine) cause?Seek emergency medical attention if you experience an allergic reaction to Claritin (trouble breathing; hives; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat). Call your doctor immediately if you develop any of the following serious conditions:
- jaundice (yellowing of your skin or eyes);
- seizures (convulsions);
- rapid or uneven heart beat; or
- feeling like you might pass out.
- feeling tired or drowsy;
- eye redness, blurred vision;
- skin rash;
- stomach pain, diarrhea;
- dry mouth, sore throat hoarseness;
- headache; or
Claritin (Loratadine) may also cause other side effects. Inform your doctor if you have any painful or uncommon side effects.
