What is Celebrex?
Celebrex belongs to the class of anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). It acts by decreasing the amount of hormones provoking pain and inflammation.
Celebrex is intended for treatment of pain or inflammation which is provoked by arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, menstrual pain and many other conditions. Celebrex may also be used to treat hereditary polyps in the colon.
This medicine may also be prescribed for other uses.
What is important to know about Celebrex?
Celebrex may increase the risk of heart or circulation severe conditions like heart attack or stroke which can even cause death. The longer you are taking Celebrex, the higher is the risk. Avoid using this medication soon after or just before a heart bypass surgery (also called coronary artery bypass graft, or CABG).
Seek emergency medical attention if you experience any of the following signs of heart or circulation problems: weakness, chest pain, problems with balance or vision, slurred speech, or uneven breath.
Celebrex can also enlarge the risk of severe conditions in your stomach or intestines, such as bleeding or perforation (making a hole). Such conditions can be deathful. Using Celebrex can also cause unexpected gastrointestinal effects. Elderly people are more exposed to these kinds of serious gastrointestinal adverse reactions.
Call your doctor promptly if you feel signs of bleeding in your stomach or intestines including black, bloody, or tarry stools, or coughing up blood or vomit reminding coffee grounds.
Avoid drinking alcohol while using Celebrex as it can intensify the risk of stomach bleeding provoked by Celebrex. You should not take any non-prescription cold, allergy, or pain medicine without your doctor’s advice. Many non-prescription drugs include aspirin or other substance which are similar to Celebrex. If you use these medicines together, you may get an overdose of this kind of medication.
How should Celebrex be used?
Follow the prescriptions of your doctor and the instructions which come with the medication carefully. Do not change your dose and do not use Celebrex for a longer period than prescribed.
Using Celebrex with milk or food, you can reduce your stomach upset.
To swallow the medicine easier, you may open the sustained-action capsule and mix the mediciation with a spoonful of pudding or applesauce. Throw out the empty capsule. Swallow the mixture with liquid, do not chew it. If you do not use the mixture immediately, you may store it for 6 days in the refrigerator.
If you are using Celebrex for a long time, you may need to be examined regularly by your doctor to be sure that the medicine does not cause you any harm. It is important for you not to miss any scheduled visits to your doctor.
Celebrex can make some medical tests to show uncommon results. Notify all the doctors who treat you that you are taking this medicine.
Keep Celebrex at room temperature protected from heat and moisture.
What side effects can Celebrex cause?Seek emergency medical attention if you experience any of the following symptoms of allergy: trouble breathing; hives; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat. Stop using Celebrex and call your doctor promptly if you develop any of the following serious conditions:
- loss of appetite, stomach pain, nausea, low fever, jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes), dark urine, clay-colored stools;
- urinating less than usual or not at all;
- black, bloody, or tarry stools;
- coughing up blood or vomit that looks like coffee grounds;
- slurred speech, problems with vision or balance, weakness, chest pain, shortness of breath;
- swelling or rapid weight gain;
- pain, numbness, bruising, muscle weakness, severe tingling; or
- sore throat, fever, and headache with a severe blistering, peeling, and red skin rash.
- ringing in your ears;
- blurred vision;
- mild heartburn, constipation, upset stomach, diarrhea;
- dizziness, nervousness, headache;
- bloating, gas; or
- skin rash, itching;
Celebrex may also cause other side effects. Notify your doctor if you experience any uncommon or painful side effects.
