Prescribing Information for Arimidex (Anastrozole):
What is Arimidex (Anastrozole)?
Arimidex (Anastrozole) is the drug used for the treatment of breast cancer. It contains anastrozole as an active ingredient. AstraZeneca manufactures this drug. Arimidex (Anastrozole) works by inhibiting the aromatase enzyme in the body. It is a non-steroidal aromatase inhibitor. This class of drugs prevents the action of aromatase in the body. This enzyme is known to cause modification and production of estrogen in post menopausal women. Those women who have crossed their menopause got estrogen through androstenedione which is produced by the ovary and testosterone is converted into estrogen by aromatase enzyme. If aromatase won’t be present in body, Post menopausal women will not bear any significant amount of estrogen in the blood. Estrogen promotes various female functions in the body.
Breast cancer is treated by anastrozole or Arimidex by inhibiting the function of aromatase. Some breast cancers are hormone receptor positive which grow under the influence of oestrogen hormone.
More the hormone more will be growth and this can even lead to spreading of the cancer to other parts of the body. If aromatase will be inhibited estrogen will not be produced in any significant amount breast cancer cells will not grow. Arimidex (Anastrozole) stops the growth of breast cancer. It helps in inhibiting the malignancy too. Arimidex (Anastrozole) is effective in postmenopausal women only because aromatase enzyme is seen in significant amounts after the menopause.
