What is Anafranil (Clomipramine HCI)?
Clomipramine is a tricyclic antidepressant medication that helps to balance certain chemicals in the brain.
Clomipramine is prescribed for treatment of signs of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), for example repetitive thoughts, feelings or actions.
The medication may also be prescribed for other uses.
What is the most important to know about Anafranil (Clomipramine HCI)?
Anafranil should not be used if you have recently had a heart attack or if you have taken an MAO inhibitor, for example selegiline (Eldepryl, Emsam), phenelzine (Nardil), isocarboxazid (Marplan), rasagiline (Azilect), or tranylcypromine (Parnate) within 14 days. It should not be taken if you have allergy to clomipramine or any similar medication like amoxapine (Ascendin), trimipramine (Surmontil), amitriptyline (Elavil, Etrafon), desipramine (Norpramin), doxepin (Sinequan), protriptyline (Vivactil), nortriptyline (Pamelor), or imipramine (Janimine, Tofranil).
Taking antidepressants for the first time can cause suicidal thoughts especially among people under 24. You will need to be examined by your doctor regularly for the first 12 weeks of treatment or more.
Call your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any new or aggravating symptoms like: changes of mood or behavior, panics, anxiety, insomnia, irritability, impulsiveness, hostility, aggression, agitation, if you feel mentally or physically hyperactive, more depressed or restless or if you have thoughts of self-injury or suicide.
How should Anafranil (Clomipramine HCI) be used?
Follow the prescriptions of your doctor and the instructions which come with the medication carefully. Do not change your dose and do not use clomipramine for a longer period than prescribed. Your doctor may adjust your dose to make certain that you get the most benefit from treatment.
In order to reduce the risk of stomach upset, take the medication with meal. If you are going to have any type of surgery, you should inform your surgeon in advance that you are using clomipramine. It may be necessary to stop taking the medication for some period of time.
If you are going to stop using clomipramine, talk with your doctor first. It may be necessary to stop using it little by little. You may need up to 4 weeks to see the results. To get the most benefit from treatment, continue taking clomipramine as prescribed. Let your doctor know if you do not feel better after 4 weeks of taking clomipramine. Keep the medication at room temperature protected from heat and moisture.
What side effects can Anafranil (Clomipramine HCI) cause?
Seek emergency medical attention if you experience an allergic reaction (trouble breathing; hives; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat).
Call your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any new or aggravating symptoms like: changes of mood or behavior, panics, anxiety, insomnia, irritability, impulsiveness, hostility, aggression, agitation, if you feel mentally or physically hyperactive, more depressed or restless or if you have thoughts of self-injury or suicide.Call your doctor promptly if you develop any of the following serious conditions:
- unexpected numbness or weakness, especially on one side of the body;
- urinating more than usual;
- pale skin, easy bruising or bleeding, unusual weakness;
- feeling light-headed, fainting;
- sudden headache, confusion, vision problems, speech, or balance;
- fever, confusion, muscle stiffness, sweating, fast or uneven heartbeats; or
- chest pain or heavy feeling, pain spreading to the arm or shoulder, nausea, sweating, general ill feeling.
- decreased sex drive, impotence, or difficulty having an orgasm;
- increased appetite, weight changes;
- sleep problems (insomnia), nightmares;
- feeling anxious, restless, dizzy, drowsy, or tired;
- dry mouth, unpleasant taste;
- increased sweating;
- nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, loss of appetite, constipation or diarrhea;
- blurred vision, trouble concentrating; or
- blurred vision.
Anafranil (Clomipramine HCI) may also cause other side effects. Inform your doctor if you have any painful or uncommon side effects.
