What is Amoxicillin (Amoxil)?
Amoxicillin belongs to a class of antibiotics called penicillins. It is intended to treat infections caused by bacterias.
It is prescribed for treatment of such infections as, bladder infections, E. coli or salmonella infection pneumonia, ear infections and gonorrhea. It is sometimes combined with antibiotic clarithromycin (Biaxin) for treatment of stomach ulcers caused by Helicobacter pylori infection. These two medicines are sometimes used together with lansoprazole (Prevacid) (a medication intended to reduce stomach acid).
Amoxicillin (Amoxil) may also be prescribed for other uses.
What is important to know about Amoxicillin (Amoxil)?
You should avoid using amoxicillin if you have allergic reaction to it or to any other penicillin antibiotic like dicloxacillin (Dycill, Dynapen), ampicillin (Omnipen, Principen), penicillin (Beepen-VK, Ledercillin VK, Pen-V, Pen-Vee K, Pfizerpen, V-Cillin K, Veetids), oxacillin (Bactocill), and others.
Before starting to take amoxicillin tell your doctor if you have allergic reaction to cephalosporins such as Ceclor, Ceftin, Duricef, Keflex, and others. Also notify your healthcare provider if you have liver or kidney problems, mononucleosis (also called \"mono\"), asthma, a bleeding or blood clotting disorder or any type of allergy.
Amoxicillin (Amoxil) may decrease the effectiveness of birth control pills and increase the likelihood of pregnancy. Inform your doctor if you take any birth control pills. Do not stop taking amoxicillin earlier than prescribed. You may feel better before you treat your disease entirely. Amoxicillin is not effective for treatment of viral infections like influenza or cold. Do not let anyone to take your medicines even if somebody experiences the same symptoms as you.
Antibiotics can provoke diarrhea which may signify appearance of a new infection. You should call your doctor if you have watery or bloody diarrhea. Do not try to treat it with any medications without advice of your doctor.
How should Amoxicillin (Amoxil) be used?
Follow the prescriptions of your doctor and the instructions which come with the medication carefully. Do not change your dose and do not use amoxicillin for a longer period than prescribed.
If you are combining amoxicillin with clarithromycin and/or lansoprazole for treatment of stomach ulcer, follow all your prescriptions. Do not forget to read all the instructions which come with your medicines. Avoid changing your doses or medication schedule unless your doctor tells you to.
Amoxicillin (Amoxil) can be taken with or without meal.
Shake the bottle with liquid form of the medicine (oral suspension) well before measuring a dose. Do not use a table spoon to measure the dose of liquid form of amoxicillin. If you do not have a special dose-measuring cup or spoon, ask your healthcare provider where you can get it.
You may add some water, milk, fruit juice, baby formula or ginger ale to your medicine or put it just on the tongue. Swallow all the mixture immediately. Do not store it.
If you are taking a chewable tablet, chew it before swallowing.
Avoid chewing, crushing, breaking or opening the sustained-action capsule. Swallow the tablet whole to prevent releasing of too much medicine at once.
To be sure that your condition is improving, you may need special blood tests. Your doctor may also need to examine your kidney or liver. It is important for you not to miss any scheduled appointments.
If you are using amoxicillin for treatment of gonorrhea, you may also be examined for syphilis, disease which is also sexually transmitted.

Amoxicillin can influence some kinds of medical tests which can show uncommon results. Notify all your doctors that you are taking amoxicillin.
Keep Amoxicillin (Amoxil) at room temperature protected from heat, light and moisture. You may keep the liquid form of medication in a refrigerator but avoid freezing it. Do not store liquid form of amoxicillin for more than 14 days since it was mixed at the pharmacy.
What side effects can Amoxicillin (Amoxil) cause?Seek emergency medical attention if you experience an allergic reaction to amoxicillin (trouble breathing; hives; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat). Call your doctor promptly if you develop any of the following serious conditions:
- agitation, confusion, unusual thoughts or behavior;
- low fever, loss of appetite, stomach pain, clay-colored stools, nausea, dark urine, jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes);
- headache with a severe blistering, peeling, and red skin rash, sore throat, fever;
- easy bruising or bleeding, uncommon weakness;
- watery or bloody diarrhea;
- flu symptoms, chills, body aches, fever;
- seizure (black-out or convulsions); or
- urinating less than usual or not at all.
- swollen, black, or \"hairy\" tongue;
- nausea, vomiting, stomach pain;
- thrush (white patches inside your mouth or throat); or
- vaginal itching or discharge.
