Prescribing Information for Allegra (Fexofenadine):
What is Allegra?
Allegra is a drug mainly used for treating hay fever in patients having hypersensitive response to allergens. It contains fexofenadine hydrochloride as a main ingredient. Allegra is a non-sedating antihistamine. This is a new class of drugs. Main function of Allegra is to stop the action of histamine in the body. Histamine is a chemical provided as a response of defense mechanism. It is stored in a specific category cells known as mast cells. Mast cells are present in almost every tissue of body when any allergen or a foreign substance enters the body. These mast cells get activated by the foreign body or allergen and they release the histamine as a response to attack by foreign body. This histamine will bind to histamine H1 receptors which are specific for histamine and latter acts through them. A series of chain reactions will occur which will produce the allergic symptoms. The blood flow increases to take particular region when the allergen is present. Many chemicals are released to the site of allergy as defense mechanism. The usually sites are upper respiratory tract, skin and eyes. The attack represents itself through coryza, conjunctivitis and skin rashes. Patients may suffer from watery eyes, running nose, sneezing and inflammation of mucous membranes of nasal tract. Fexofenadine or allegro acts by blocking the receptivity of histamine H1 receptors. The histamine is released from the mast cells but it cannot produce any chain reaction in the body because of blocked H1 receptors. The other allergic chemicals are not produced as chain reaction is stopped. There will be no congestion, no watery eyes, no nasal discharges and the exaggerated response of histamine is prevented. The symptoms of allergy are subsided by the use of Allegra. It will suppress the symptoms of hay fever. Allegra is a non-sedating antihistamine and will not cause any drowsiness.
