Category description:
Weight loss, is an area of medicine which administers people’s weight. Weight depends on health or physical fitness. Usually people want to reduce their mass rather than increase it. Reduction of the overall body mass, can be achieved by loss of fluid, body fat or adipose tissue and/or lean mass, namely bone mineral deposits, muscle, tendon and other connective tissue. Sometimes it could happens unintentionally due to an underlying disease or it could arise from a conscious effort to improve an actual or perceived overweight.
There are two types of weight loss
- Therapeutic weight loss, is applied to people who are overweight or obese. It can decrease the likelihood of developing diseases such as diabetes, stroke, heart disease, osteoarthritis, high blood pressure and even certain types of cancer.
- Intentional weight loss refers to the practice of losing of total body mass in an effort to rise up fitness and health, and to improve general appearance.
Diet is still one of most efficient methods of weight loss. Attention to diet can be extremely beneficial in reducing the post-diabetes effects and other health risks of an overweight or obese individuals.
Weight loss occurs when an individual is in a state of negative energy balance. When the body is using more energy (i.e. in work and heat) than it could get from food or other nutritional supplements), it will use kept reserves from fat or muscle, which leads to gradual weight loss.
Usually people who are at their ideal body weight don’t seek for additional weight loss in order to advance athletic performance, and/or meet required weight classification for participation in a particular sport. But others may be inspired by achieving a more attractive body image. Therefore, being constantly underweight is associated with health risks, which includes but not limited to difficulty fighting off infection, decreased muscle strength, osteoporosis, trouble regulating body temperature and even increased risk of death.
Weight loss medications
Some supplements, including those containing vitamins and minerals, may not be effective for losing weight. Particular weight loss medications, like amphetamines, are really dangerous and are now banned for casual weight loss. The most recent prescription weight loss medication released is Acomplia (generic name Rimonabant). It is used to treat obesity in persons with a BMI (body mass index) of above or equal 30 and also used for smoking cessation treatments.
