Category description:
The skin is the external covering of the body.
It made up of multiple layers of ectodermal tissue and also it’s known as the largest organ of the integumentary system of humans.
The major function of this system is as a barrier against the external environment.
It composed of skin itself, nails, hair, and related muscle and glands.
Skin guards the underlying stuff (i.e. muscles, bones, ligaments and internal organs).
Human skin is similar to that of most other mammals except that it is not protected by a pelt and appears
hairless but in fact almost all human skin is covered with hair follicles. There are two general types of skin,
hairy and glabrous skin. Skin plays a key role in protecting (the body) against pathogens and excessive water loss
because it interfaces with the environment. Its other functions are sensation, synthesis of vitamin D, insulation,
protection of vitamin B folates, temperature regulation. Severely damaged skin tries to heal by forming scar tissue.
The human skin is a rich environment for microbes. About 1000 species of bacteria from 19 bacterial phyla currently known.
Conditions of the human integumentary system constitute a broad spectrum of diseases, also known as dermatoses.
All dermatoses could be divided into several types:
- Atopic
- Contact
- Eczema
- Pustular
- Seborrheic
