This drug belongs to the class of non-inflammatory anti steroidal drugs and controls the level and secretion of prostaglandins in the body. Prostaglandins are chemicals that are responsible for causing inflammation, swelling, pain in the joints mostly related with arthritis and similar ailments. Meloxicam is the generic drug sold under the brand name of Mobic. Meloxicam attacks the enzyme cyclooxygenase1 and 2 resulting in low production of prostaglandins. As a result there is a reduction in the swelling and pain leading to relief to the patient. This drug is available in two strengths 7.5 mg and 15 mg. They are yellow, biconvex uncoated tablets that contain meloxicam as its active ingredient. The tablets are to be kept at a dry place between temperatures 15 to 30C.
Mobic is a prescription drug that is recommended for tenderness, inflammation, swelling that is usually caused due to symptoms of osteoarthritis or gout. In the beginning the lowest possible dosage is given to the patient. This medicine is generally started with Meloxicam 7.5 mg tablets and gradually may be increased if the patient responds to it positively.
Patients who are on ACE inhibitors, asthma attack history, allergic reaction for aspirin and other medicines under the NSAID’s must not be administered this drug. Consumption of alcohol must not increase more than 3 drinks in 24 hours. Medical studies suggest that high amount of alcohol may increase the risk of developing ulcers.
Mode of Use
With every medicine there is a medication guide that is provided. Read it carefully and when you buy the drug from your pharmacist ask if you have any doubts before consuming the medicine. Sometimes refill dosage may require some modification so check for the label and instructions for taking your medicine after every refill. This medication needs to be taken by mouth. Never crush the tablet under your teeth; it must be swallowed with water. This drug is also available in liquid form. Shake the bottle gently to allow the medicine mixture to dissolve completely and take it along with a full glass of water. It is suggested not to lie down immediately and give at least a 10 to 15 minutes gap before you proceed to lie down or sleep. You can have food, or an antacid with this drug if you experience stomach upset with this. Before administering antacid consult your doctor so as to which antacid is safe to use. Never take more or less than the recommended dose and try not to skip any dose. If by mistake you skip a dose take it as soon as you remember it, but do not take it if it’s time for your next dose already. In this case skip the earlier one and continue with your regular routine. Some side effects may be experienced in the beginning but they will fade away as your body gets use to the medicine. Remember to inform your doctor if the condition is not improving and worsens after administration of meloxicam.
