Antibiotics are used to treat big and small infections. They hold a great importance in our lives. In our everyday life we come across various microbes and bacteria about which we are unaware. Even if we are aware we just ignore their presence. If the bacterium takes some serious action we will be trapped in some severe infection. But not to worry we can have an antibiotic to fight with the invaders in our body. Eating open food in stalls outside, sitting with an infectious person in a school, shaking hands with colleagues at your workplace are avoidable situations, but they can lead to infections anytime.
Numerous brands and molecules of antibiotics
are available in the market. They are classified on the basis of their action mechanism. Antibiotics inhibit the growth of bacteria through various means. Like for instance if the antibiotic attacks on the cell membrane or the cell wall of the bacteria or act against the bacterial enzymes are the penicillin or the cephalosporin class of bacteria. They are known as bactericidal antibiotics. The antibiotics which inhibit the protein synthesis in bacteria and kill them are called bacteriostatic antibiotic.
One of the common examples of cephalosporin class of bacteria is Cefixime
. Its third generation antibiotic used to treat infections caused by bacteria by preventing their cell wall synthesis. Cefixime was sold by the brand name Suprax
in the USA till the year 2003. Then its availability was stopped due to the expiration of its patent name. But later on it was re-launched as an oral suspension by Lupin. Cefixime is manufactured all over the world but the major manufacturing unit is based in India.
Ear infections caused by Haemophilus influenzae, S. pyogenes and Moraxella catarrhalis, nose infections, sinuses, throat infections, chest and lung infections, Urinary tract infection are cured by using Cefixime. All these infections can be treated by cefixime at an early stage but if the situation is too complicated than other drugs might also be required.
In the patients who are allergic towards the cephalosporin type of drugs should avoid the intake of this drug. It can have adverse reactions like dyspepsia, diarrhea, vomiting and nausea. It can also cause hypersensitivity reactions like utricaria, skin rashes, Steve Johnson syndrome etc. if Cefixime is taken in over quantities, it has no specific remedy. Gastric lavage might remove it upto large extent, dialysis will be of little help in removing a considerable quantity of cefixime from the body.
Before taking the dosage of Cefixime, it is important to consult a doctor. There are certain case where the used of this drug should be avoided. If a patient is suffering from kidney problem then it should be taken under a doctor’s supervision. A pregnant lady should avoid its use. A feeding mother cannot take it because it will mix with the milk and reach the baby’s body. It cannot be given to a baby under than 6 months of age. It should be taken exactly in quantities and conditions which are prescribed by the doctor, for it to work properly.
