Take Adalat to Tackle High Blood Pressure

Hypertension and other cardiovascular diseases are affecting a large population nowadays. Too much stress, lack of exercise, unhealthy diet all makes our bodies a store house of illnesses and problems. Nowadays young people are also suffering from high blood pressure and diabetes at a very early age. Nifedipine is the generic drug that is used to treat hypertension and other cardiovascular issues such as chest pain [angina]. This medicine belongs to dihydropyridine calcium channel blocker which works by blocking the calcium voltage gates in cardiac muscles and blood vessels. The overall effect results in decreased level of calcium which reduces muscular contraction. As the calcium level drops the heart’s ability to contract slows down effectively resulting in increase of arterial diameter. This expansion of the arteries can also be said as vasodilation due to which there is a drop in the blood pressure. Also there is an increased supply of oxygenated blood to the heart.
Adalat is the brand name for the generic Nifedipineand has been in the market for many years now. This drug comes in the form of a capsule and also a tablet which is a long acting one that must be taken by the oral route. If the patient is taking the capsule it is generally recommended three to four times or as suggested by the doctor. The tablet form which is extended release is taken once a day preferably on an empty stomach. It is necessary to take this medicine at the same time daily and all the directions on the prescription label must be followed carefully. If you are confused or have any doubts about it do not hesitate to ask your pharmacist. These types of medicines may take few weeks to show its effect on your system and must be taken regularly without missing/skipping any dose. Never take more or less than prescribed by your physician as it may prove dangerous for your health and may cause adverse effects on your body. The capsule or the tablet must be swallowed through the mouth and never be chewed or crushed between the teeth. In the beginning a low dose of Nifedipine is started and increased after a week or 14 days.
When on Adalat the doctor may prescribe a low sodium/salt diet that must be followed sincerely. It is also recommended to avoid grapefruit juice while on Nifedipine. Other than these the patient can follow regular healthy nutritious diet with lots of green veggies, fruits and must try to avoid processed and synthetic food.
There has been some side effects reported such as headache dizziness, fast heartrate, reduced sexual ability, cough, constipation etc., but these will fade away after few weeks as the body gets use to the medicine.
If a patient experiences severe adverse reaction such as rash, swelling of the face, hands, feet, fainting, chest pain, a doctor must be contacted immediately so as to rule out the cause for this condition. Sometimes the doctor may prescribe alternative medicine or change the dose if they feel the resulting condition is due to a high dosage of Adalat.
