Tizanidine with trade names such as Zanaflex, Sirdalud is a medicine which is used to relax muscles. Zanaflex tablet contains active ingredient tizanidine. Tizanidine is a type of drug which is known as alpha – 2-adrenoceptor agonist. Tizanidine (Zanaflex) is used for treating tightness of muscles, cramping and spasms which are caused due to medical problems like spastic diplegia, multiple sclerosis, back pain and some other injuries due to central nervous system or spine. For a sleep aid, migraine headaches and as anticonvulsant Tizanidine (Zanaflex) is prescribed off label.
Tizanidine tablet is composed of active ingredient the tizanidine hydrochloride and inactive ingredients stearic acid, microcrystalline cellulose, silicon dioxide colloidal and anhydrous lactose. Tizanidine (Zanaflex) is available in 2 mg and 4 mg. In gel capsule form Tizanidine (Zanaflex) is available in 2 mg, 4 mg and 6 mg. This medication generally starts working in one to two hours and after six to eight hours it wears off. It may be taken every six to eight hours but it is not supposed to take more than thirty six milligrams per day. The dose of Tizanidine (Zanaflex) will depend on patient’s medical condition and patient’s response to therapy.
Tizanidine (Zanaflex) treatment is not supposed to use with medications like ciprofloxacin
as serious interactions can occur. Tell doctor if you are taking some of these medicines before starting treatment of Tizanidine (Zanaflex). If you are taking medicines like antiarrhythmics (such as mexiletine, verapamil, propafenone, amiodarone), blood pressure drugs (like lisinopril, clonidine, propranolol, methyldopa, guanfacine, guanabenz), birth pills, cimetidine, medicines affecting liver enzymes (like zileuton, acyclovir, ticlopidine, norfloxacin) and water pills consult with your doctor before medication. Consult with your doctor if you are taking medicines which cause drowsiness like diphenhydramine, anti seizure like carbamazepine
, anti anxiety drugs such as diazepam, sedatives, narcotic pain relievers or psychiatric medicines before starting Tizanidine (Zanaflex) medication.
Tizanidine (Zanaflex) medication should not be used in patients who suffer from severe decreased liver function. People taking antidepressant should not use this treatment. It is unknown that Tizanidine (Zanaflex) passes into breast milk or not. Ask your doctor about its effect on breast feeding. This medication is not recommended in adolescents and children under age of 18 years, as information is not available about its efficacy and safety in this group of age. In some hereditary problems of Lapp lactose deficiency, galactose intolerance or glucose galactose malabsorption this treatment should not be used as Tizanidine (Zanaflex) tablet contains lactose.
Slow heart rate, fainting, feeling light headed, confusion, hallucinations, unusual behavior or thoughts, nausea, low fever, stomach pain, dark urine, loss of appetite, clay colored stools and pain or burning when urinate can be some serious side effects of Tizanidine (Zanaflex). Dizziness or drowsiness, feeling nervous or anxious, tingling or numbness, diarrhea, vomiting, constipation, back pain, muscle weakness, dry mouth, sweating, skin rash or increased muscle tone and spasms are some minor side effects of Tizanidine (Zanaflex). This drug can cause withdrawal reaction if this treatment has been used in high doses or for long period. To prevent this doctor can reduce dose gradually.
