is marketed under trade names Berlactone, Novospiroton, Aldactazide
, Spirotone, Aldactone
, Spiractin or Verospiron. Spironolactone (Aldactone) is a diuretic and it is used as antiandrogen. Spironolactone (Aldactone) is the potassium sparing diuretic. To retain water and salt in the body is kidney’s one of main functions. In heart failures and cirrhosis patients, adrenal glands produces increased level of hormone which is known as aldosterone causes fluid and salt to be retained by kidneys, but at same time it causes elimination of potassium by kidneys. So body is overloaded with water and salt and it results in worsening the heart failure. Aldosterone action is inhibited by Spironolactone (Aldactone) which causes kidney to excrete fluid and salt in the urine with retaining potassium. So Spironolactone (Aldactone) is classified as potassium-sparing diuretic, the medicine which promotes output of urine and allows kidneys to hold on potassium.
In Oct 1985 Spironolactone (Aldactone) was approved by Food and Drug Association. Spironolactone (Aldactone) is used to treat ascites in patients with lever disease, heart failure, hypokalemia (where potassium level of blood is low), low-renin hypertension, Conn’s syndrome and secondary hyperaldosteronism. Spironolactone (Aldactone) is used for treating hirsutism because of its antiandrogen effect. Polysystic Ovary syndrome symptoms like acne and excess facial hair Spironolactone (Aldactone) treatment is commonly used. It may be used as topical medication for treating male baldness. It is used in treating acne and hair loss in women. Combination of Spironolactone (Aldactone) and other drugs is used for treating elevated blood pressure.
Tablets are available in 20mg, 50mg and 100mg. Spironolactone (Aldactone) can be taken without or with food. Blood sodium level is lowered by Spironolactone (Aldactone) and at same time blood potassium level is raised. High blood potassium levels can cause abnormalities in rhythm of heart. So Spironolactone (Aldactone) is not taken with other drugs which may raise potassium level in blood like potassium supplements, indomethacin and other potassium sparing diuretics. Effect of Spironolactone (Aldactone) in pregnancy is unknown. Spironolactone (Aldactone)’s active metabolite is passed in breast milk. Nursing mothers should not use it for avoiding the side effects in new born. If you suffer from kidney disease, high potassium level in your blood or urination problems.
A diet with high salt should be avoided if you are taking Spironolactone (Aldactone) treatment. The higher amount of salt in body will retain water in body and may make Spironolactone (Aldactone) treatment less effective. Ask your doctor about the amount and type of liquids you are supposed to drink. Drinking a lot of liquid and not drinking enough both can be unsafe. Some side effects of Spironolactone (Aldactone) includes diarrhea, headache, drowsiness, cramps, vomiting, impotence, rash irregular menstrual periods, nausea, urinating not at all or less than usual, stomach pain irregular hair growth and tingly or numbness feeling. Electrolytes and fluid imbalance can occur such as low sodium, high potassium and low magnesium, so patients with Spironolactone (Aldactone) should be carefully monitored. Enlargement of breast can occur which is related to duration and dose of Spironolactone (Aldactone).
