Terabinafine is antifungal antibiotic with brand name Lamisil
(Lamisil) is used in treatment of infections due to fungus which affects fingernails or toenails. In children who are above four years old Terbinafine (Lamisil) oral granules are used in treating scalp hair follicles fungal infection. Terbinafine (Lamisil) is antifungal which can be applied to skin or can be taken orally. For the treatment of fungal nail infections Terbinafine (oral) is much more effective than itraconazole and griseofulivn which are another antifungal agents for fungal nail infections treatment. Terbinafine (Lamisil) is a fine crystalline white powder. In water it is slightly soluble, in ethanol is soluble and in dichloromethane and methanol it is freely soluble. In 1993 Food and Drug Association approved topical Terbinafine (Lamisil) and in 1996 Terbinafine (Lamisil) tablets were approved.
On dermatophytes fungi group Terbinafine (Lamisil) is effective mainly. One percent powder or cream is used in treatment of superficial skin infections like athlete’s foot, jock itch and some different types of ringworm. It is seen that Terbinafine (Lamisil) takes half of the time to cure the problem than time taken by other antifungal. For treating onychomycosis of the finger nail or toenail due to dermatophyte tinea ungium Terbinafine (Lamisil) oral tablets of 250mg are prescribed. As the location of fungal nail infections is deep under the nail, topically applied treatments cannot penetrate in enough amounts to cure. For treating fingernails the general dose for Terbinafine (Lamisil) is 250mg onetime per day for six weeks. For treatment of toenails the dose is 250mg onetime per day for 12 weeks.
A recommended dose for children having weight below 20kg is 62.5mg per day and for children having weight between 20kg to 40kg dose is 125mg per day. Terbinafine (Lamisil) can be taken without or with food. Generally cream is suggested to apply two times a day for one to four weeks. Rub the cream gently into affected area. Terbinafine (Lamisil) treatment can take many months to see the benefits of this medicine after you finish the treatment. For growing the healthy nails and for replacing the infected nails some time is taken. The all prescribed amount of Terbinafine (Lamisil) treatment should be completed. Fungus may continue to grow resulting in return of infection if treatment is stopped too early.
Terbinafine (Lamisil) therapy in pregnancy is not recommended. Breast feeding mothers should not use Terbinafine (Lamisil) on breast or should not take medicine orally. Efficacy of Terbinafine (Lamisil) is reduced by reducing Terbinafine blood concentrations by Rifampin
. Terbinafine (Lamisil) blood levels can be increased by cimetidine. Some serious side effects of Terbinafine (Lamisil) are swelling or joint pain, swollen glands, butterfly shaped skin rash on cheeks and nose, patchy skin color, body aches, chills fever, flu symptoms, weight loss because of taste change, change in vision, itchy, flaky, scaly skin rash, sore throat, headache and fever. Diarrhea, heartburn, stomach pain, tired feeling, cold symptoms, stuffy nose, unpleasant or unusual taste in mouth and decreased taste sensation are some minor side effects of Terbinafine (Lamisil).
