(Topamax) is anti epilepsy
or anticonvulsant medicine. Topiramate (Topamax) is a medication for seizures of epilepsy. Topiramate alone or combined with other drugs is used for preventing seizures. For preventing migraine headaches Topiramate (Topamax) is used. Only prevention of migraine headaches and reduction of number of attacks is done by Topiramate. It cannot treat headache which has already started. Primarily this treatment is used for those people who are not controlled by other antiseptic medicines. Some abnormal activities of nerves in brain cause seizures. Abnormal activities are spread to larger or smaller portions of brain. In 1997 Topiramate (Topamax) as tablet was approved by Food and Drug Association. In Oct 1998 Food and Drug Association approved Sprinkle capsules.
The perfect mechanism of action of Topiramate (Topamax) is unknown. But scientific studies say that Topamax
can alter neurotransmitters in the brain. Nerves manufacture the neurotransmitters and use it to communicate with other nerves which are near to them. By altering the action of neurotransmitters, the abnormal activities of nerves in brain causing seizures can be suppressed by Topiramate (Topamax). In 25mg, 100mg, and 200mg tablets of it are available. In 15mg and 25mg Sprinkle capsules are available. Seizures can be classified as partial seizures and generalized seizures. In partial seizures a little portion of brain is involved and more of brain is involved in generalized seizure. Generalized tonic-clonic seizures include prolonged contraction of muscles of body which causes jerking as well as rigidity.
Combination of Topiramate (Topamax) with some other anti seizure medicine is used in treating generalized tonic clonic seizures or partial seizures in children of 2 to 16 years and adults. Topiramate Sprinkle capsules alone for treating patients of 10 year and older is approved. Topiramate (Topamax) is used in children for treating Lennox Gastaut Syndrome, a type of disorder which causes developmental delay and seizures. Children with this disorder experiences dozens of mixed, different types of seizures in a day. The common types of the seizures of this disorder are tonic seizures where stiffening of body with rolling upward eyes occurs, atonic seizures where abrupt falls occurs and myoclonic seizures where sudden muscle jerk occurs.
When Topiramate (Topamax) is taken in combination with acetazolamide, dichlorphenamide, methazalomide and dorzolamide the risk of kidney stone is increased. Phenytoin and carbamazepine decrease the Topiramate (Topamax) amount in body by increasing Topiramate (Topamax) elimination from body which may lose effectiveness of it. If you have asthma, bronchitis, emphysema, glaucoma, liver disease, kidney disease or you are allergic to any drug tell your doctor before taking Topiramate (Topamax). Dizziness, tiredness, speech problems, coordination problems, changes in vision, double vision, sensory distortion and difficulty with memory are common side effects of Topiramate. Drowsiness, loss of appetite, weight decrease, difficulty with memory, difficulty with attention, difficulty with concentration, nervousness and tiredness are common side effects of Topiramate seen in children. Psychomotor slowing, fatigue, memory problems, confusion, somnolence are some side effects of Topiramate which leads to the discontinuation of Topiramate (Topamax) therapy.
