Flucanazole - With trade name of Trican or Diflucan
it is marketed commonly. As Dofil, Afungil or Alfumet it is sold in Mexico. In Persian Gulf Area it is marketed with brand name Candivast. Flucanazole (Diflucan) is trizole antifungal drug. It is used to treat and prevent the systematic and superficial fungal infections. It is in powder form. It looks like white crystalline powder. Flucanazole is soluble in water very slightly and in alcohol it is soluble. Flucanazole (Diflucan) is antifungal medication which is related to ketoconazole, clotrimazole, miconazole and itraconazole. The prevention of fungi growth is done by Flucanazole by preventing the production of membranes which surround cells. In Jan 1990 Flucanazole was approved by Food and Drug Association.
Tablets of Flucanazole (Diflucan) are available in 50mg, 100mg, 150mg and 200mg. Oral suspension is available in10mg/ml and 40mg/ml. Injection is available in 2mg/ml. Flucanazole (Diflucan) is used in treatment of oral, esophageal and vaginal fungal infections caused due to candida. Flucanazole is also useful in treatment of cryptococcal meningitis. Diflucan (Flucanazole) prevents candida infections in people who are on treatment of radiation or chemotherapy after the bone marrow transplantation. The general dose for adults is fifty mg to four hundred mg per day depending on type of infections. Oral candida infection may become less in few days but treatment is given for two weeks. Ten to twelve weeks treatment is supposed to give for the cryptococcal meningitis. Treatment for esophageal candida infections may be of three weeks or longer.
Use of Flucanazole by pregnant women is not recommended. Nursing mothers should not use Diflucan (Flucanazole) as it passes into breast milk. It increases concentration of cyclosporine, theophylline, zidovudine, phenytoin
, glyburide, midazolam and glipizide. Concentration of warfarin in blood may be increased by Flucanazole by reducing metabolism of warfarin. Due to this, effect of warfarin can increase leading in increased bleed tendency. Blood concentration of oral Flucanazole is reduced by Rifampin
by reducing metabolism of flucanazole in liver resulting in reduction of Flucanazole effectiveness. Consult your doctor before using Flucanazole (Diflucan) medication if you have any liver disease, kidney disease, heart failure, family history of heart problems and slow heart beat problems. Flucanazole can cause a condition which affects heart rhythm.
Nausea, diarrhea vomiting, headache, hair loss, stomach upset, stomach pain or dizziness may occur with Flucanazole (Diflucan) treatment. Consult doctors promptly if any of these side effects persists. Generally people with Flucanazole (Diflucan) medication do not suffer from very serious side effects. But if some serious side effects such as fainting, severe dizziness and fast heart beat or irregular heart beat occurs, get immediate help of doctors. If you develop signs of liver disease including abdominal pain, severe stomach pain, vomiting, nausea, dark urine, yellow skin, yellow eyes and unusual tiredness contact doctors immediately. Some infrequent side effects of Flucanazole (Diflucan) are constipation, fatigue and anorexia. Oliguria, paraesthesia, hypokalaemia, seizures, thrombocytopenia, Stevens Johnson syndrome, alopecia, serious hepatotoxicity are rare side effects of Flucanazole (Diflucan). Do not share Flucanazole (Diflucan) with others as it is prescribed to you for your current condition.
