Amoxicillin - its uses and adverse effects

Amoxicillin is a drug used to cure bacterial infection. It was earlier known by the name Amoxycillin and abbreviated as Amox. It is a moderate range β-lactam antibiotic which is bacteriolytic in nature and sold as a brand named Amoxil. Bacterial infectivity caused by the sensitive microbes is cured by Amoxicillin. It is the most popular choice of antibiotics especially for children since it is absorbed faster and better with oral intake as compared to other beta lactam antibiotics. Amoxicillin is prone to degradation by beta lactamase-producing microbes. These bacteria are resistant to penicillin, a broad spectrum antibiotic. This is the reason it is given in combination with clavulanic acid which inhibits β-lactamase. The combination increases its effectiveness by decreasing its sensitivity to β-lactamase resistance. Amoxil is a brand which contains Amoxicillin produced by GlaxoSmithKline. It comes in 250mg and 500mg capsules.
Amoxicillin is used to cure numerous bacterial infections like streptococcal pharyngitis, acute otitis media, pneumonia, urinary tract infections, skin infections, lyme disease, salmonella and chlamydia infections. People who have got some dental treatment done are prone to bacterial endocarditis at a high risk and Amoxicillin is used for its treatment. Those without a spleen use this drug to prevent from strep pneumococus infections and for the treatment of anthrax. It also cures cystic acne. Its use is not advised in UK for the treatment of infectious endocarditis prophylaxis, however these recommendations have not altered the rates of infections.
When there is a treatment, there has to be its side effects. Every drugs consumed in overdose is harmful and Amoxycillin has its adverse effects too. Just like other β-lactam antibiotics, Amoxycillin have similar adverse effects, which includes vomiting nausea, rashes on skin and antibiotic-associated colitis. Extreme loose stools or diarrhea also may be seen. Not very commonly seen in many patients, but it also showed somewhat unusual side effects like mental fatigue, insomnia, and anxiety confusion lightheadedness, sensitivity towards bright light and high sound and hazy thinking in many people. If these effects are seen then an immediate medical treatment is recommended.
The beginning of an allergy towards Amoxil can occur suddenly with sudden change in mental conditions and rashes on skin, which spreads rapidly. It is often associated with other side effects like mild fever, nausea and vomiting. In such cases an immediate medical attention should be given to the patient. These extreme side-effects take place mostly in the patients who are allergic to Amoxycillin; they can be even deadly sometimes. In other patients only slight effects are seen like rashes which gradually disappear after the course is completed. The combination of Amoxicillin & clavulanic acid if taken for more than a week may mild hepatitis in few persons. Acute overdoses of Amoxicillin in children have manifested vomiting, lethargy and renal dysfunction.
It is very important that you take this high-class drug under the supervision of your physician. Simply do not use this drug for treatment if you are sensitive towards Amoxicillin or to any other penicillin antibiotic of this family such as Ampicillin, Oxacillin, Penicillin and Dicloxacillin.
